Summary:
As an employee of Maryland Masonic Homes, this position shall be committed to working in accordance with the Mission, Vision, Values and Guiding Principles of the Maryland Masonic Homes. In addition, this position shall be committed to providing "Meaningful Living" for its residents and their families.
• Performs all major duties and responsibilities of a Medication technician, as well as the following duties:
• Works under the direct supervision of a Licensed Nurse.
• Safely prepares and administers oral and topical medications as ordered.
• Appropriately signs off all medications administered.
• Reports any medication held/refused to the nurse.
• Accurately gathers and reports information concerning a resident's condition to the nurse.
• Reports PRN medication administered to nurse.
• Maintains cleanliness and order of medication carts/med room.
• Utilizes drug book or other drug related information to keep current with medications.
• Routinely checks medications and removes expired meds and re-orders as needed.
• Performs all duties in accordance with the established methods and techniques and in conformance with the recognized standard of the Medication technician.
• Follows all policies and procedures and rules of medication Administration.
• Identifies and reports medication errors.
• Orders and maintains sufficient supply of medications.
• Reviews daily bowel records and reports abnormalities to Nurse.
• Includes each of the following pertinent subjects:
a) Responsibilities and limitations of the Medication technician.
b) Drug standard, references, and resources.
c) Legislation concerning drug utilization.
d) Characteristics of the elderly client.
e) Sources and purposes of drug therapy.
f) Dosage forms and methods of administration.
g) Drug life.
h) The medication orders.
i) The administration on non-parenteral medications.
j) Procedures and techniques for administering drugs.
k) Drug classification, related health problems and patient care responsibilities.
l) Drug solutions and their measurements.
m) Monitoring for side effects of drugs and drug interactions.
• Assist with Resident Care, COVID testing, Colostomy Bags and changing.

• Must have successfully completed an approved program for Nursing Assistants in the state of Maryland or have been approved as a Geriatric Nursing Assistant through the guidelines per the State of Maryland.
• Has taken or has been "grandfathered" into the Maryland State Competency Evaluation administered per State of Maryland guidelines.
• Is in the process of or has been placed on the Maryland Registry for Geriatric Nursing Assistants.
• Has successfully completed an approved program for Medication technician.
• Minimum of one-year long term/Assisted Living care experience preferred.
Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
• Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel and the public.
• Must possess the ability to plan, organize, and implement the delivery of quality, direct, hands-on nursing care.
• Must be knowledgeable of the standards of care as they relate to the geriatric nursing assistant role in long-term care.
• Must have patience, tact, a cheerful disposition, and enthusiasm, as well as the willingness to handle challenging residents.
• Must be willing to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing nursing practices.
• Possesses and demonstrates knowledge of proper medication storage.
• Possesses and demonstrates knowledge of general principles of drugs.
• Maintains current certification per state guidelines.
• Must be able to meet the standards of the MMH MVP Customer Service Program. Physical Requirements:
• Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
• Must be able to cope with the mental emotional stress of the position.
• Must possess sight/hearing senses or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
• Must function independently, and have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with residents, personnel, and support agencies.
• Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability.
• Must be able to lift, push, pull and move equipment, supplies, etc. more than 50 pounds.
• Must be able to assist in the evacuation of residents.
• Works throughout the nursing service area (i.e., nurses' stations, resident rooms, etc.)
• Sits, stands, bends, lifts, and moves intermittently during working hours.
• Is subject to frequent interruptions.
• Is involved with residents, personnel, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc. under all conditions and circumstances.
• Communicates with the medical staff, nursing personnel, and other department employees.
• Works beyond normal working hours and on weekends and holidays, when necessary, as well as in other positions as needed.
• May be subject to mandatory overtime as circumstances warrant.
• Attends and participates in continuing educational programs.
• Subject to falls, injuries, odors, etc., throughout the workday.
• Subject to exposure to infection waste, diseases, conditions, etc., including the AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses.
• Maintains a liaison with the resident, their families, support departments, etc., to adequately plan for the resident's needs.
• Must be able to relate to and work with the ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and at times, hostile situations within the facility.
