Independently programs, installs, troubleshoots, repairs and maintains complex traffic signal and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) devices such as cellular modems, wireless radios, fiber optic equipment, side‑fired radar detection, Dynamic Message System (DMS), freeway surveillance cameras, ramp meters, Highway Advisory Radio (HARs), truck parking systems, Destination Dynamic Message Signs (DDMS), variable speed limits, flashing beacon systems, queue warning signs, railroad & emergency vehicle preemption, connected vehicle infrastructure, Multi‑Modal Intelligent Traffic Signal Systems (MMITSS), Road Weather information System (RWIS), tunnel fire alarm & notification systems. Utilizes computer and related software (e.g., Centracs, Milestone, Vanguard) and diagnostic test equipment (e.g., OTDR, copper network testers, optical power meter) to monitor traffic signal & ITS systems remotely and gather data such as error logs, performance metrics, signal event & fault reports. Develops a basic understanding of Ohio Revised Code (ORC) sections, Ohio Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (OMUTCD) and Traffic Engineering Manual (TEM) to ensure compliance and public safety. Monitors and verifies traffic signal system and ramp meter synchronization, communication and operation, making necessary adjustments. May serve as lead worker, directing lower‑level Signal Technician(s) and other crew members during maintenance, rebuilding, repair and installation of traffic signals, highway lighting and related electrical items. Operates state vehicle to travel to worksites and equipment such as bucket trucks to inspect and maintain roadway information systems. Reviews construction plans to ensure proposed work meets departmental standards; conducts final inspections of complex traffic signal systems and components installed by contractors; creates punch lists for items requiring follow‑up. Gathers data, prepares documentation and maintains files for “as built” construction plans, cabinet drawings, timing charts and maintenance records using software such as Centracs, Milestone and Vanguard. Verifies and certifies timing records, monitors test reports and records for public record requests or court hearings. Reviews materials and catalogs for traffic control devices, recommends solutions, stays abreast of new technologies and industry standards, and provides oral or written reports to supervisors based on testing and field conditions. Calculates quantities and prepares work orders or plans for replacement of deficient equipment, performs minor repairs and maintenance, reports defective equipment and project completion to supervisors, and reviews user guides for troubleshooting. Operates computer or mobile devices and related software (e.g., ServiceNow, Collector) to enter, maintain and retrieve data, keep track of vehicle miles, complete inspection reports on traffic control devices, maintain material inventories, place orders and make necessary purchases when directed. Assists with shop clean up, attends meetings and trainings as directed, and provides direction or input based on departmental standards. Performs other duties as assigned, such as trimming small branches or limbs and checking power, using proper tools (e.g., trimmers, hand tools). Unusual Working Conditions Exposed to electrical hazards; works outside and exposed to inclement weather (temperature extremes, ice, snow, rain), rough terrain, dust, dirt, fumes, and noise; may be exposed to poisonous plants, insects, rodents, and snakes; may be exposed to moving traffic; may be on call 24 hours per day, 7 days per week; may require overnight travel; may work at heights up to 300 feet above ground or water. Education & Experience Requirements Undergraduate core in electrical engineering or engineering and transportation technology; 36 months of experience troubleshooting, maintaining and repairing electrical circuits and traffic signal components. OR 60 months of combined electrical training and experience to include 60 months of traffic signal or ITS related training and experience. OR 24 months of experience as a Traffic Signal Technician 2. OR equivalent minimum class qualifications for employment noted above. Certification & License When operating motorized equipment regulated by Ohio Revised Code sections 4506.1, 4506.03 & 4506.12, a valid commercial driver license is required.
