NOW HIRING: DIRECTOR OF CONSTRUCTION Opportunity

An established organization is seeking an experienced Director of Construction to manage all company site work projects simultaneously while utilizing internal and external resources to achieve overall company and project deadlines and goals.

The Director of Construction will provide direction throughout all phases of a site work project, helping to identify and assess risk while managing expectations around cost, schedule, quality, and feasibility .

This role will also provide strategic leadership, direction, management, and the vision necessary during construction to ensure the overall successful delivery of each project.

What You’ll Do (Essential Duties & Responsibilities)

Construction Operations

• Manage overall construction operations in conjunction with the General Superintendent
• Ensure site work projects are completed in a quality, accurate, cost-effective, timely, and safe manner
• Provide direction throughout all phases of site work projects
• Identify and assess project risks
• Manage expectations around cost, schedule, quality, and feasibility
• Ensure individual projects stay on budget and on time

Project Management Leadership

• Provide leadership to the Project Management team
• Oversee Project Manager responsibilities
• Assign workload and coordinate responsibilities
• Assist with problem-solving
• Serve as a mentor to Project Managers
• Ensure optimal performance across the Project Management team

Financial & Cost Management

• Oversee and regularly review project cost reports
• Provide monthly reporting to senior leadership
• Prepare reports detailing changes to project budgets as needed
• Support monthly financial and board meetings
• Answer questions regarding construction projects
• Summarize construction projects and current challenges
• Highlight outstanding work and project issues

Contracts & Project Schedules

• Ensure Project Management conducts timely reviews of all contract and subcontract scopes and schedules
• Ensure reviews are completed within two weeks or less
• Facilitate execution of contracts and subcontracts by senior leadership
• Make contractually binding decisions from project inception through completion

Estimating & Bid Reviews

• Participate in bid reviews as needed
• Provide feedback to the Estimating department
• Communicate with the Chief Estimator regarding project historical data
• Analyze historical project data
• Make recommendations regarding bid pricing strategy
• Regularly review project tracking data for use in cost reporting and bid pricing strategy

Training & Development

• Assess training needs for the Project Management team
• Develop or obtain appropriate training
• Schedule training
• Oversee delivery of training for employees
• Coordinate and report the training schedule for inclusion on the company-wide training schedule

Strategic Planning

• Assist the Executive Team in the development of strategic plans
• Assist with the development of annual budgets
• Participate in special projects as needed

Safety

• Adhere to all safety policies and procedures as they relate to office personnel

Additional Responsibilities

• Perform other responsibilities assigned by management

What You Bring (Qualifications & Education)

Education

Bachelor’s degree required, with major coursework in:

• Construction
• Finance
• Engineering
• Business Administration
• Or a related field

Experience

• 7–10 years of experience successfully managing projects from conception through completion

Skills

• Exceptional negotiating skills, ideally with experience dealing with:
  • Government authorities
  • Consultants
  • General contractors
  • Material suppliers
• Strong leadership presence
• Proven ability to manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously
• Ability to coordinate numerous activities and groups of people to achieve maximum efficiency
• Strong communication skills

Supervisory Responsibilities

The Director of Construction will have:

• 7 direct reports
• 40–50 indirect reports

Responsibilities include providing leadership and direction to the Project Management team, assigning workload, assisting with problem-solving, mentoring employees, and ensuring optimal performance.

Financial Responsibilities

The Director of Construction will be responsible for ensuring individual projects remain on budget and on time .

The role will also oversee project cost reports, support monthly financial reporting, and provide information for monthly financial and board meetings.

Decision Making

The Director of Construction will be responsible for:

• Making contractually binding decisions from project inception through completion
• Assessing challenges and risks at the operations level
• Making decisions related to project cost, schedule, quality, and feasibility
• Providing recommendations related to bid pricing strategy and project performance
