Job Description Assistant United States Attorneys in the Civil Division perform an important public service by representing the interests of the United States in civil actions brought by or against the United States in federal and state courts. The primary responsibilities include defending the United States in civil immigration cases including habeas relief under 28 U.S.C. § 2241 and immigration cases under the Administrative Procedures Act (APA). They also defend the interests of the United States in cases involving medical malpractice, defensive torts, foreclosures, Social Security, bankruptcy, personal injury, affirmative civil enforcement, actions under the Freedom of Information Act, quiet title suits, condemnations, and Touhy requests related to criminal case testimony and document requests in state and federal cases. In addition, they undertake a high volume of litigation in other practice areas including medical malpractice, employment discrimination, administrative procedures litigation, prisoner litigation, personal injury tort litigation, actions on promissory notes, and actions to defend or enforce subpoenas. Responsibilities Represent the United States in civil actions in federal and state courts. Defend immigration-related matters, including habeas relief and APA cases. Handle cases across diverse practice areas (medical malpractice, foreclosures, Social Security, bankruptcy, personal injury, FOIA, condemnations, etc.). Manage a high volume of litigation across additional practice areas as needed. Conditions of employment You must be a United States Citizen or National. Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication (fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing). Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation. You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable. J.D. degree and active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) required. Must reside in the district to which appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district-specific information. Qualifications Required Qualifications: J.D. degree and active membership in the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction). Demonstrated computer literacy, including experience with online research, email, and word processing. United States citizenship is required. Preferred Qualifications: Superior oral and written communication skills, strong analytical ability, sound judgment, and robust litigation skills. Ability to manage complex, document-intensive cases and an interest in technology and document automation. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Compensation Assistant United States Attorney pay is administratively determined based on years of professional attorney experience. The pay range is $65,563 to $171,487; total pay depends on the office location. Total pay for Wichita, Kansas ranges from $76,748 to $197,100 (includes 17.06% Rest of U.S. locality pay). Total pay for Kansas City and Topeka ranges from $78,000 to $197,100 (includes 18.97% Kansas City locality pay).
