Job Title: Phlebotomist II

The Phlebotomist II plays a key role in providing high-quality specimen collection and processing services across multiple clinic locations. This position focuses on performing blood draws and other specimen collections for patients ranging from pediatric to geriatric, ensuring accurate labeling, handling, and transport of specimens. The role also involves troubleshooting workflow issues, assisting with training, and making recommendations to improve efficiency, while delivering excellent customer service and maintaining strict compliance with safety and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

• Perform blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, ensuring patient comfort and safety.
• Collect and store specimens, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, according to established procedures and test requirements.
• Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection processes to patients, primarily adults and geriatric patients, with occasional pediatric collections.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all information to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Package specimens for transport and follow all protocols to maintain specimen integrity during handling and transit.
• Store specimen samples at required temperatures and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes.
• Attend annual department trainings and maintain current knowledge of procedures and regulations.
• Answer telephone calls, provide laboratory results when appropriate, and respond to inquiries in a professional manner.
• Handle a high volume of draws, typically 30–40 per shift, while maintaining accuracy and quality.
• Work independently in a float capacity, traveling to various clinic sites and adapting to different work settings.
• Ensure specimen accuracy and proper storage.
• Provide excellent patient care and customer service.

Essential Skills

• Minimum of 1–2 years of experience as a phlebotomist.
• Experience performing blood draws with pediatric through geriatric patients, including heel sticks on babies, with at least 1–2 years of related experience.
• Proficiency in venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles.
• Demonstrated ability to handle 30–40 blood draws per shift while maintaining accuracy and patient care standards.
• Excellent customer service skills and the ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients and clinical staff.
• Ability to work independently across multiple sites and adapt to different clinical environments.
• Reliable means of transportation to travel between clinic locations.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience processing specimens after drawing, including labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and preparing for transport.
• Comfort working in a variety of clinic settings and adjusting to different workflows and teams.
• Experience with mobile phlebotomy and traveling between multiple locations.
• Familiarity with laboratory environments and procedures for specimen collection and processing.

Work Environment

• This position is a float role that requires travel between multiple clinic locations across areas such as Halsted, Addison, Schaumburg, Oak Park, Lakeview, Downtown Chicago, and additional sites as needed.
• Training will take place at a designated primary location during the first two weeks of employment. The schedule is provided 1–2 weeks in advance so you know where to report each day.

Shift: Monday through Friday between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., with rotating Saturday shifts from approximately 8:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. or 9:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.; when scheduled for a Saturday shift, you receive a weekday off, and Saturday shifts typically occur about once per month.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Itasca, IL.

The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $23.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
