Campus Police Officer (RIC)

Overview Campus Police Officer at Rhode Island College (RIC) provides service and protection to the campus community, properties, staff, faculty, visitors and students. The department partners with Student Services, Residential Life, Physical Plant and others to maintain a safe campus environment and protect college properties. Responsibilities Independently perform a full range of tasks involved in protection, safety and security of individuals and property on campus. Patrol campus on foot, bicycle and/or in marked police cruisers; inspect campus buildings and grounds; guard against fire, theft, damage, defacement and/or destruction; maintain order and security on campus premises. Identify and apprehend criminal offenders as permitted by law and participate in subsequent court proceedings. Provide emergency medical services to the campus community, including first aid and aid to individuals who are injured or in danger of physical harm. Perform duties in accordance with applicable State and Federal laws and ordinances, as well as College and Department rules, regulations, policies and orders. Operate a communications office including dispatching and keeping police records; perform routine maintenance on police vehicles. Coordinate efforts with other Department members to ensure teamwork and achievement of Department objectives. Communicate all pertinent information promptly and accurately to supervisors and fellow Officers. Document the provision of police services and file all reports and documents prior to the end of each shift with accuracy and completeness. Ensure that all property seized, recovered or taken for safekeeping is properly marked, receipted and stored. Care for and maintain Department equipment to keep it functional and presentable; perform duties efficiently and professionally to bring credit to the Officer, the College, the Department and the law enforcement profession. Assist and provide information to members of the campus community; explain when the Department does not have jurisdiction and advise on appropriate procedures. Serve and/or deliver warrants, summonses, subpoenas and other official papers promptly in accordance with law and campus policy. Coordinate with Court prosecutors as needed and appear in court as summoned to testify professionally. Enforce laws and ordinances in a fair and professional manner and respond punctually to all assignments. Operate a communications office and keep police records; ensure completion of necessary reports and court-related documentation. Cooperate with other law enforcement agencies in the enforcement of laws and regulations. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Security and Safety, Chief of Campus Police or designee. Qualifications Education: Possession of a high school diploma or GED plus successful completion of a POST-certified Police Training Academy curriculum. Experience: Prior full-time POST-certified police officer experience, including retention of life and property protection responsibilities; experience with arrest/detention of violators. Combination of Education and Experience: NA Special Requirements: Must possess valid POST certification; must be physically qualified by a physician’s certificate; valid motor vehicle operator’s license; ability to pass a national background check; ability to pass a state-approved psychological examination; must pass pre-employment drug screening and any random post-employment screening; within 6 months of appointment, must acquire and maintain First Responder Certification from the Rhode Island Department of Health. Knowledges, Skills and Capacities: Working knowledge of applicable regulations and college environment; ability to investigate incidents, enforce traffic regulations, prepare accurate reports, render first aid, operate a police communications office, maintain records, and communicate effectively; ability to act decisively and professionally in emergencies; ability to follow oral and written instructions and to interact respectfully with others.
