Project 180 is a leader in the forensic treatment space, offering high-quality, specialized treatment programs that serve thousands of justice-involved individuals. The programs span criminal justice intercepts and include pre‑arrest interventions, court‑based diversions, jail in‑reach, and intensive post‑release services. Project 180 operates in partnership with County agencies including the Department of Mental Health (DMH), the Department of Health Services (DHS), and the Justice, Care and Opportunities Department (JCOD). Program Overview Project180’s DMH programs provide intensive, wraparound behavioral health treatment and services to justice‑involved individuals with significant mental health problems. Clients receive outpatient care and are served through co‑occurring services provided by a multidisciplinary treatment team. Services include psychotherapy, case management, medication management, substance counseling, employment, and housing navigation, in partnership with LA County Probation, LA County Department of Mental Health, and LA Superior Court. The AB109 program provides intensive, wraparound behavioral health treatment to a forensic population. Through Assembly Bill109, individuals convicted of a felony crime serve a portion of their sentence in jail or prison and are released early with one year of community supervision. If appropriate, participants are mandated to behavioral health treatment by LA County Probation. The program aims to reduce recidivism and support clients with personal recovery goals. The Outpatient Care Services (OCS) program provides community and clinic‑based mental health services that are recovery‑focused and evidence‑based, tailored to meet each client’s needs in the most appropriate setting. Position The Addiction Specialist will work within an interdisciplinary team to provide substance support for mutual clients with a forensic background. The role reports to the AB109 Program Supervisor and is responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive treatment plans for clients in collaboration with case managers and therapists, coordinating substance treatment services, and conducting individual and group sessions to assist with substance recovery. This position is a clinical expert on the treatment team, building strong relationships with clients and supporting them in making measurable progress towards individualized substance recovery goals. The job title (I‑III) will be determined based on years of relevant experience. Essential Functions Provide direct client care via individual and group treatment. Actively engage clients through motivational interviewing and consistent contact. Provide outreach services as needed, meeting clients where they are. Deliver individual and group substance counseling aligned with recovery goals. Facilitate weekly substance psychoeducational groups. Conduct urine analysis tests as indicated by the client’s treatment plan. Coordinate community‑based substance treatment services and develop partnerships with residential, sobering/detox centers. Link clients to needed community resources and monitor participation. Accompany clients to linkage appointments when appropriate. Collaborate with external partners (DMH, DPH‑SAPC, probation, primary care clinics) to ensure integrated care. Engage with multidisciplinary treatment team to coordinate client care and participate in team meetings. Document and report: maintain comprehensive case notes in the electronic health record, submit billing records, participate in program data collection, adhere to mandated reporting requirements, and fulfill baseline staff expectations. Maintain regular attendance; holiday or weekend work may be required. Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor. Maintain an active license and/or registrations as applicable (e.g., BBS, CCAPP). Skills and Abilities Clinical expertise in substance counseling with high‑quality service delivery. Empathetic and able to develop strong client relationships. Excellent communication skills, building rapport and effectively engaging clients. Culturally competent, understanding and sensitive to diverse backgrounds. Collaborative, able to work in diverse teams to solve complex issues. Adaptive to changing circumstances and client needs in a dynamic environment. Strong critical thinking and problem‑solving skills. Detail‑oriented, organized, and proficient in time management. Minimum Qualifications Registered or certified as a substance abuse counselor from CCAPP. Experience working with culturally diverse populations. Valid California driver’s license, proof of insurance, and own vehicle capable of transporting clients in personal vehicle. Must not be on any type of legal supervision (probation or parole). Verification of employment eligibility and background check. Basic computer skills. Experience Levels Addiction Specialist I: Less than 2 years experience. Addiction Specialist II: 2 years experience. Addiction Specialist III: 3 or more years of experience. Preferred Qualifications Experience working with forensic and/or dual diagnosed populations. Experience working on an interdisciplinary team in a mental health or outpatient setting. Knowledge of and experience with providing trauma‑informed services. Spanish speaking. Environmental Conditions Job duties are performed in both office and field settings, including Project 180’s interim housing sites. Physical requirements include walking, standing, climbing stairs, or using a mobility device. The employee is expected to drive, carry a maximum of 20 lbs, listen, and speak as required to complete job responsibilities.
