Department Information This position is open only to Colorado state residents. This position will receive a short-staffing temporary pay differential of 4% from July 1, 2025 - June 30, 2026. Campus Locations Aspire Youth Services Center Golden Peak Youth Services Center Summit Youth Services Center Job Summary You are required to work at your assigned work location during your scheduled work times. Work arrangements are subject to change at any time. Summary of Position Delivers health care to detained and committed youth within the nurse’s scope of practice. Primary care is provided by independent practitioners with responsibility for a continuum of care from the initial assessment through development and maintenance of health care including physical, psychiatric and dental maintenance. Specific Job Duties Clinical Duties : Initial nursing assessments and triage of requests for health/medical care submitted by youth. Reviews admission medical information obtained by security staff at intake. Administers nursing care and provides education for routine, urgent, and emergent medical situations within scope of practice. Obtains laboratory and diagnostic procedures, reviews results, and notifies providers when indicated. Initiates treatment plans for youth with special health care needs and revises plans as required. Completes health appraisals, vision/hearing screenings, in‑house laboratory testing and immunizations per DYS policy. Documents all encounters in electronic medical records and maintains confidentiality per HIPAA. Initiates consultations/referrals to mid‑level provider or physician as indicated. Responds to emergent situations (Code Blue, Code Red) on campus, administers CPR/First Aid, and initiates 911 call if needed. Delivers medications, supplies and evaluates youth who may be confined to specific buildings. Other nursing duties are delegated or ordered by DYS physicians or mid‑level providers. Medication and Treatment : Responsible for ordering and preparation of youth’s medications. Transcribes, procures and administers medications per provider orders. Maintains Medication Administration Records (MAR) and monitors for errors. Educates youth and staff on medication use. Investigates and documents interviews with youth refusing medication. Maintains inventory logs of medications and prepares for administration. Monitors inventory, restocks supplies and checks first‑aid kits, AEDs, refrigerators and other equipment. Assesses vaccine status and administers vaccines per CDC protocols. Mental Health : Evaluates residents’ mental status through interview, health appraisal and observation. Provides basic mental health interventions, refers to psychiatrist or mental health resources, and involves parents and guardians. Conducts mental health referrals as necessary. Health Education : Provides individual and group education on health promotion, disease and injury prevention, healthy lifestyle, sleep hygiene, stress management, dental care, STI/safe sexual practices, contraceptive options, injury prevention and other identified needs. Identifies gender‑specific educational needs. Provides ongoing education on medication administration, infection prevention and related topics to staff. Minimum Qualifications Current, valid licensure as a Registered Nurse from the Colorado Board of Nursing or any state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC). Preferred Qualifications Experience with adolescent health care. Experience with mental health nursing. Experience with correctional nursing. Relatable experience as a current or previous State of Colorado employee. Highly Desirable Competencies Knowledge of current medications, administration, actions and use. Ability to work in collaborative relationships with other professionals. Ability to assess and coordinate community health care services for clients and families. Ability to collect, record and interpret data concisely and accurately. Ability to self‑regulate emotions when provoked or under conditions of stress. Conditions of Employment Minimum 21 years of age, no felony convictions or history of domestic violence. Full background check required (CBI, ICON, Medicare fraud database, reference checks, professional license verification, drug screen, PREA, Trails, CAPS). Must be a State of Colorado resident at the time of application and throughout employment. Motor Vehicle Record check and valid, non‑restricted Colorado driver’s license. Ability to work shift work as required. Essential Services Designation – required for essential or emergency services. Travel may be required to other DYS Youth Centers for coverage, meetings and training. Exposure to hazardous materials – medical waste handling. Must maintain current CPR card and perform CPR per guidelines. Continued employment contingent on successful completion of DYS Pre‑service Training Academy, Field Training Program and mandatory annual training.
