Veterinary Technician Learning and Development Specialist - CVT/LVT/RVT | $35.50–$45/hour
Location: Portsmouth, NH | 100% Onsite | This is not a remote or hybrid position.

Port City Veterinary Referral Hospital is seeking an experienced, credentialed Veterinary Technician to join our team as a Technician Learning and Development Specialist (TLDS) in Portsmouth, NH. This full-time, onsite position offers a unique opportunity to combine clinical research, technician education, and hands-on patient care while helping advance veterinary medicine through Ethos Discovery.

You'll work closely with our doctors, technicians, veterinary assistants, and hospital leadership to strengthen clinical skills, support evidence-based medicine, and create meaningful learning opportunities across our emergency and specialty hospital.

Compensation

• $35.50–$45/hour, based on experience and qualifications.

  Schedule  

• Full-Time: Four 10-hour shifts per week (40 hours).
• Rotating weekends to maintain connections with team members across all shifts and departments.
• Approximately four clinical floor shifts per month to remain actively involved in patient care and hospital operations.
• Remaining shifts dedicated to clinical research, technician education, professional development, and collaboration with hospital leadership.

Responsibilities
Ethos Discovery & Clinical Research
As our Technician Learning and Development Specialist, you will serve as the primary hospital champion for Ethos Discovery, helping connect clinical research with everyday veterinary medicine.

• Identify and lead a minimum of four Ethos Discovery studies or initiatives annually.
• Partner with veterinarians, specialists, Veterinary Technicians, and hospital leadership to identify meaningful clinical research opportunities.
• Translate complex research studies and protocols into clear, manageable steps that encourage team participation.
• Coordinate research activities across emergency, critical care, and specialty services.
• Build team awareness, engagement, and participation in active Discovery studies.
• Monitor study progress, track completion, and communicate findings to hospital leadership.
• Share research outcomes and clinical learning with the broader hospital team.
• Encourage team members to identify clinical questions, unmet needs, and opportunities for future research.
• Help connect research findings with evidence-based veterinary medicine and real-world patient care.

Veterinary Technician Learning & Development
You'll play an important role in supporting the professional growth of our Veterinary Technicians and Veterinary Assistants through hands-on education, coaching, and clinical skill development.

• Develop and facilitate clinical education, in-services, and hands-on training opportunities.
• Partner with Clinical Supervisors to identify learning needs and support individual development plans.
• Assist with the development, implementation, and sign-off of technician protocols.
• Strengthen clinical skills, critical thinking, and confidence across technician experience levels.
• Provide mentorship and guidance to Veterinary Technicians and Veterinary Assistants pursuing advanced clinical skills.
• Create approachable learning opportunities that connect research findings with daily clinical practice.
• Encourage team members to ask questions, evaluate current practices, and explore evidence-based approaches to patient care.
• Collaborate with doctors, technicians, and leadership to identify opportunities for continued clinical improvement.

Clinical Practice & Team Collaboration
While this position focuses primarily on research and education, maintaining a strong clinical presence is an essential part of the role.

• Work approximately four clinical floor shifts per month to remain connected to patient care and hospital workflow.
• Maintain strong working relationships with doctors, technicians, veterinary assistants, and clinical leadership across departments and shifts.
• Use hands-on clinical experience to identify opportunities for education, protocol development, and Ethos Discovery research.
• Support collaboration between emergency, critical care, and specialty teams.
• Connect clinical research and technician education with the practical needs of our patients and hospital team.

Qualifications

• Required: Certified, Licensed, or Registered Veterinary Technician (CVT/LVT/RVT).
• Strongly Preferred: Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) certification.
• Minimum of 5 years of veterinary technician experience preferred.
• Strong clinical knowledge and hands-on experience in veterinary medicine.
• Experience in emergency, critical care, or specialty veterinary medicine preferred.
• Strong teaching, coaching, communication, and organizational skills.
• Demonstrated interest in clinical research, veterinary education, and evidence-based medicine.
• Ability to translate complex clinical information into clear, practical learning opportunities.
• Strong collaboration skills and the ability to build relationships with veterinarians, technicians, veterinary assistants, and hospital leadership.
• Ability to coordinate multiple research initiatives while maintaining clear communication and organized documentation.
• Comfortable working onsite and maintaining an active clinical presence through approximately four floor shifts per month.
• Availability to work four 10-hour shifts, including rotating weekends and potential day or night shifts based on clinical needs.
• Fluent English speaking and reading skills required.
