Title: Special Education Sign Language Interpreter Location: Special Services Reports To: Instructor(s), Program Administrator Department: Special Services Hours / Work Times: 6.5 Hours Per Day (times to be determined); 190 Days Per Year (180 student days/10 Holidays) Positions Available: Up to 10 Start Date: Aug 24, 2026 Position Duration: Permanent Classification Group: Professional Technicians (PSE) Class VII Position Type: Part‑Time Salary Placement: New employees start at the minimum hourly rate in the classification salary range; prior years of service may receive experience credit. Salary: $34.21 to $44.17 per hour Benefits: Medical, dental, vision, basic long‑term disability, basic life and AD&D insurance via SEBB (eligible after 630 hours) FSA, DCAP, HSA, FPFSA (w/HDHP) and other supplemental benefits Retirement benefits via DRS Paid holidays and paid time off (vacation, sick, personal, religious, bereavement) Summary Statement: Under the supervision of the program instructor(s)/Program Administrator, the interpreter will assist in supervising instructional and other activities by interpreting and tutoring for deaf/hard‑of‑hearing students individually and in small groups. Essential Functions Assist the program instructor(s) in supervising and working with elementary or secondary students. Communicate effectively with students, staff, and the general public. Transliterate and/or interpret information accurately in a manner appropriate to the student's communication level. Assist in instructional and other activities by transliterating/interpreting and tutoring on a one-to-one basis and on a group basis. Assist in establishing and maintaining a learning environment as specified by course goals and curriculum outcomes. Assist in evaluating and specifying direction of instruction so as to maximize each student's potential. Maintain accurate data on student progress. Implement behavioral management strategies as outlined by the instructor. Assist with explaining technical assistance needs for interpreting (lighting, visual aids, positioning, time, length, changing languages). Attend inservices and workshops to stay current with deaf culture issues. Other Responsibilities Perform other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Meet Washington State Requirements for Sign Language Interpreters in Educational Settings; EIPA with minimum score 4.0 and passing written test, or NIC from RID and passing written test. Demonstrated communication with students, staff, and parents. Previous knowledge and background working with students preferred. Fluency and initiative, cooperativeness, and confidentiality. Organizational skills and ability to follow through. Ability to communicate by telephone, TDD, and relay service. Willingness to participate in activities, inservices, and workshops to improve interpreting and deaf culture knowledge. Ability to encourage independence in students, avoid inappropriate interpreter dependence. Ability to work under constant interruptions. Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. Establish and maintain positive relationships with others as part of a team.
