As a Physical Therapist in this role, you will provide comprehensive physical therapy services to adult and geriatric patients, and possibly select adolescent populations depending on the setting. Responsibilities include performing detailed initial evaluations, developing individualized plans of care, setting functional goals, and delivering therapeutic interventions tailored to each patient's needs. Common clinical presentations may include orthopedic and musculoskeletal conditions, post-surgical rehabilitation (such as total hip and knee replacements, rotator cuff repairs, and spinal procedures), neurologic conditions, balance and gait impairments, and general deconditioning. Your typical day will involve coordinating closely with physicians, nurses, occupational and speech therapists, and case managers to ensure safe, effective, and efficient patient care and discharge planning. You will provide patient and family education on home exercise programs, safety strategies, mobility training, and strategies to optimize long-term function and independence. Documentation is completed using an electronic medical record system, allowing for efficient charting and communication across the care team. Depending on the specific setting (outpatient, acute care, or inpatient rehabilitation), patient caseload and ratios may vary. Outpatient schedules typically provide a steady flow of patients throughout the day, allowing for structured one-on-one sessions and progressive treatment plans. In acute care or inpatient rehab, you may see a range of 8–14 patients per day, with an emphasis on early mobility, functional training, and safe discharge planning. Shifts are generally daytime hours with potential for some weekend or holiday coverage, shared among team members to support work-life balance.
