SOCIAL WORKER

Social Worker – Itinerant

The Social Worker will serve as a home/school liaison for students and families. This individual will work in tandem with the school counselor and administration to create plans to support students on an individual basis who are in crisis or having academic, attendance, social, emotional or behavior issues in the classroom. The Social Worker will also assist with increasing parental involvement through parent workshops, home visits, mentoring and working with outside agencies to improve the student/family environment.

Performance Responsibilities:

• Work in collaboration with school administration, counseling staff, nurse, psychologist, specialists, truancy interventionists and instructional staff to identify at risk students.
• Work with the school counselor and administration to create individualized plans that support students who are in crisis and/or have academic, attendance, social, emotional or behavior issues in the classroom.
• Provide professional counseling support to identified families/students in crisis.
• Work with truancy interventionists, teachers, counselors and administration to improve student attendance and decrease tardiness by assisting with home visits, regular, documented contacts with student and families, and acting as a broker to obtain the services needed by these families to improve student attendance.
• Work with school based personnel and outside agencies to decrease discipline referrals and infractions; increase family involvement activities; and increase involvement with community members.
• Work with teachers to establish relationships with community and business leaders to become mentors and tutors to students.
• Assist staff in the development and implementation of appropriate discipline procedures.
• Incorporate a variety of strategies to insure on-going family and community involvement that insures sustainability.
• Maintain documentation and evidence of these activities through logs, sign-in sheets, etc. and be able to compare program success to beginning and end data points.
• Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, county policy and administrative regulations.
• Maintain professional work habits.
• Maintain professional competence through continuing education activities provided by Raleigh County Schools and/or self-selected professional growth activities.
• Perform other duties assigned by the Principals, Federal Programs Director, Deputy Superintendent or Superintendent.

Qualifications:

• BA/BS Social Work, minimum.
• Strong written and communication skills.
• Familiarity with local agencies and services offered for at-risk students in the areas of academics, social adjustment, emotional support, and/or behavior intervention.
• Demonstrated knowledge of crisis intervention techniques.
• Demonstrated knowledge of improving student attendance.
• Demonstrated knowledge of working with entire family units in efforts to improve student attendance.
• Demonstrated knowledge of organizing community leaders to assist with educational advancements.
• Strong organizational skills to develop on-going, sustained parental and community involvement at the school level.
• Demonstrated knowledge of analyzing data and developing an action plan based on the data analysis.
• Criminal history check of new applicants for licensure as per WV Code §18A-3-10.

The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff members.

Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Most commonly, the educational setting is indoors with outdoor settings for recess and field trip activities. The noise level in the work environment is low to moderate (20-60 dB). Exceptions include gymnasiums as well as vocational/ technical laboratories where the noise levels may be moderate to loud (60-90 dB).
