Department Website: Job Description And Duties Under general supervision, operate fire apparatus and equipment during wildland and structural firefighting operations; lead an assigned crew in the performance of firefighting duties; maintain and make minor repairs on vehicles, equipment, and fire stations; perform fire prevention tasks, and other related work. When performing in a paramedic position, as part of a paramedic team, render emergency medical assistance at the advanced life support level; perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation and electrical defibrillation; lift and transport injured persons; administer intravenous fluids as needed; obtain blood for laboratory analysis; interpret cardiac arrhythmias; provide pulmonary ventilation; administer drugs; assist in childbirth; drive medical rescue vehicles under emergency conditions; prepare documentation associated with patient care; present demonstrations and classes in first aid, CPR and other subjects to employees and the public. Eligible candidates may be placed in an apprenticeship program. Duties for Fuels Reduction Crews include operating prescribed fire ignition tools, fuels reduction equipment, and coordinating planning and training. Special Requirements The position(s) require medical clearance prior to being hired. Incumbents are required to wear respiratory protection equipment (including SCBA) and must be annually medically cleared for fit‑testing. The clearance process includes a comprehensive medical evaluation, review of medical history, physical examination, and vision, hearing, spirometry, and treadmill test. Possession of a valid driver’s license of the appropriate class with any applicable endorsements is required prior to job offer. Acceptable driver’s licenses include: Class A or B Commercial with a tank endorsement and no restriction for airbrakes California Class A, B, or C with a Firefighter endorsement (restriction 50) An out-of-state driver’s license valid for operation of firefighting equipment within the employee’s home state Possession of a valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) Card of Completion is required prior to job offer. Incumbents who have worked as a Fire Fighter II ... and have not had a break in service greater than 12 consecutive months do not need to obtain a new CPAT card. For paramedic positions, possession of a current California EMT-P license or a National Registry EMT-P license is required. Paramedic applicants must have a California EMT-P license prior to job offer. Candidate must complete CAL FIRE Fighter Academy (FFA) and Company Officer Academy (COA) training during the probationary period as a condition of employment. The Bargaining Unit 8 (BU8) Memorandum of Understanding regarding Voluntary In-Class Transfer Policy (Inter-Unit) may require two years of service in the current assignment and completion of the JAC program before eligibility for transfer.
