Police Officer Position

This position requires knowledge of law enforcement methods and procedures, as well as demonstrated technical skills necessary for performing general police duties. Specific responsibilities will vary, depending upon the bureau, division, or unit to which an officer is assigned. Salary - Entry Level Pay/Top Out Pay $45,438.73 - $60,482.07 PS8 - No experience and/or no education beyond high school. $49,778.14 - $66,258.14 PS9 - Certified Officer, U.S. Military Service, fluency in two languages and/or Associate Degree. $54,551.47 - $72,611.73 PS10- Bachelor's Degree.   • High school diploma or GED certificate.
  • College Transcripts and legible copies of ANY college diplomas.
  • ALL DD-214 forms, if applicable. (Military)
  • Three letters of recommendation addressing the Civil Service Board with the person making the recommendations' address, phone number, and signature. No family members; only someone who can speak of your character who is not related.
  • Birth certificate.
  • Legible copy of CURRENT driver's license (front and back).
  • A legible copy of a Social Security card.
  • FAILURE to upload these required documents could eliminate you from this hiring process.

Please be aware of the following requirements:

  1. Prior to the Physical test, you are required to turn in the Physician's Release Form filled out by a Physician or Nurse Practitioner. (These forms will be available prior to the Physical test.)
  2. Must pass the Physical Agility test to proceed in the hiring process.
  3. Must pass the written test with a score of 70 or above to proceed in the hiring process.

This position requires some knowledge of law enforcement methods and procedures, as well as demonstrated technical skills necessary for the performance of general police duties. Specific responsibilities will vary, depending upon the bureau, division, or unit to which an officer is assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities and Supervision Required

1. Performs general police duties:

  • Patrols to prevent and discover the commission of a crime.
  • Apprehends and arrests violators of local, state, and federal laws.
  • Enforces ordinances of the City of Florence, state, and applicable federal laws.
  • Patrol in a manner to promote positive police/community relations.
  • Investigate automobile accidents in the City of Florence.
  • Responds to calls involving misdemeanor and felony crimes.
  • Answers calls on a wide variety of domestic-related disturbances.
  • Renders assistance to mentally ill persons.
  • Aids neglected and abused children.

2. Prepares Alabama Incident and Offense Reports, Uniform Traffic Citations, Missing Person Reports, Intelligence Reports, major case files for the District Attorney, monthly reports, daily reports, Supplement Reports, Arrest Reports, writes case summaries for the District Attorney, writes affidavits for arrest, Search Warrants, and other documents as necessary.

3. Conducts Investigations:

  1. Conducts preliminary investigations at the scene of crimes. Conducts follow-up investigations as assigned.
  2. Proficiently administers emergency first aid to persons at crime scenes and accidents. Protects and gathers evidence at crime scenes.
  3. Locates and questions witnesses and takes statements, as necessary.
  4. Testifies as a witness in city, state, and federal courts, in both civil and criminal cases.

4. Establishes traffic control, crowd control, and police protection at incidents or events which may attract crowds:

  1. Performs traffic and crowd control at parades, special functions, and sporting events.
  2. Escorts funeral processions, dignitaries, and moving of buildings.
  3. Checks and reports on defective streets, obscured lights, signs, and damaged road surfaces of missing facilities which serve to expedite the safe and proper flow of traffic.

5. On assignment and under the direct supervision of a higher-ranking officer, may perform routine or non-complex investigative work, including but not limited to:

  1. Surveils houses, businesses, etc. where criminal activity may occur.
  2. Works as an undercover agent, as assigned.

6. Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Minimum Qualifications, Experience, Training, & License
  1. All candidates must have a valid Alabama driver's license or be capable of obtaining a valid Alabama driver's license.
  2. All candidates must be certified by the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission within the first nine months of employment.
  3. High school graduate, preferably supplemented by advanced education or some professional work experience.
  4. Must reside within 50 miles of Florence Police Headquarters.
Required Knowledge Skills Abilities
  1. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  2. Ability to concentrate and remain calm in stressful situations.
  3. Ability to understand instructions and relay information quickly and accurately.
  4. Excellent decision-making skills.
  5. Ability to handle delicate situations in a discreet manner.
  6. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other city departments, and the public.
  7. Ability to pass and maintain the minimum standards required by the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission.
  8. Additional requirements, such as testing or other assessment criteria, may be established by the Civil Service Board and will be announced on the job posting.

Physical Demands:

  1. Must meet the minimum physical standards as required by the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission.
  2. Must pass a psychological evaluation.
  3. Must pass a drug screen.
  4. Must be capable of performing all job-related duties, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Equipment/Tools Used: Must be capable of operating a computer system, a firearm, two-way radio equipment, and other law enforcement-related equipment.
