Compact Construction Apprentice Technician

Job Description Primary function of the apprentice technician is to learn through classes and hand-on training how to perform routine mechanical repairs on construction equipment. Essential Duties Learn and use safety practices associated with shop operations and usage of various types of shop equipment and shop tooling. Learn required PPE for different shop situations. Gain understanding of basic business concepts associated with the service department and complete proper service documentation as required, including time entry, service reports, part order forms and returns, core tags and warranty tags. Gain exposure to Caterpillar information systems to assist with diagnostics, troubleshooting, assembly/disassembly processes and ordering parts. Use logical troubleshooting procedures based on the Cat network or external sources, including computer diagnostics, troubleshooting guides, wiring schematics and disassembly & assembly guidelines. Use hand and power tools to remove, install, replace, rebuild, repair, and test parts. Perform routine repairs on construction equipment. Use hand and power tools to disassemble/reassemble parts or equipment, drain fluids into tubs, clean parts with rags, cleaners and power washer. Climb onto, under, and into equipment and use tools to disassemble/reassemble equipment. Assist other GPEC technicians with larger equipment repairs. Minimum Requirements Education Must have a high school education or GED. Work Experience Must be mechanically inclined with good basic knowledge obtained through schooling or work experience. Physical Must be able to daily and repeatedly stoop, kneel, bend and climb onto and underneath various equipment to perform diagnosis and repairs; must be able to see clearly to perform repairs, research technical manuals, and develop written repair work order reports. Must be able to routinely lift or position various parts up to 112 pounds and use mechanical hoist for heavier parts. Other Must be able to effectively write repair activities on customer work orders; must have cognitive reasoning and problem‑solving skills to apply knowledge, written information and verbal instructions in repairing/servicing unusual and/or unknown technical equipment operational problems; should have exposure to PC-based equipment and parts information; capable of learning and understanding technical information, service manuals and reports.
