Our mission is to create transformative medicines of tomorrow based on the cutting-edge science of today. We leverage BMS's internal invention engine that includes industry-leading expertise in small molecule chemistry, protein biotherapeutics, cell therapy, protein degradation, nucleic acids, and other therapeutic modalities.Position SummaryWe seek a talented senior scientific leader to combine expert knowledge in immunology and cardiovascular disease and drug discovery to contribute to our departmental leadership, evolution, and portfolio.The candidate will help drive our early discovery portfolio of innovative internal programs and external strategic alliances that aim to combine cutting edge drug discovery approaches with a growing understanding of mechanisms of immune reset, tissue repair, and cardio-specific delivery. The candidate will have the opportunity to develop strategies for discovery within the ICV TRC and across BMS expertise in high throughput biology, chemistry, and computational sciences. The candidate will also participate in the evaluation of external opportunities in the areas of immunology and cardiovascular biology and lead the development and management of an external collaborations with projects ranging from early target discovery to IND submission.As part of the Discovery Biology Group within the Immunology and Cardiovascular Thematic Research Center (ICV TRC) the successful candidate will have responsibilities for new target identification efforts and discovery programs from target validation, lead optimization and into clinical development.The successful candidate will be an important leader of immunology and cardiovascular Discovery Biology group, located in Lawrenceville NJ and Cambridge MA. The ICV TRC is a highly collaborative department, working across our locations with many colleagues throughout the Research and Development organization. The successful candidate will also have the demonstrated ability to interface with external groups, including CROs and both academic and industrial collaborators to delivery on a pipeline of new target molecules. The position offers an exciting opportunity to make a difference in lives of patients and interact with the broader scientific community. The successful candidate will also be encouraged to publish their work and to present at external meetings and conferences.Position ResponsibilitiesIn the role as Executive Director within the Immunology and Cardiovascular TRC, the ideal candidate:Applies leading-edge knowledge of principles, concepts, practices, and techniques to lead highly complex projects involving multi-disciplinary groups and external organizationsIs recognized as an influential authority across the company and in the external community and is a known subject matter expert in drug discovery that provides strategic and functional guidance in immunology and cardiovascular diseases and drug developmentRecognizes and champions drug discovery programs and initiatives to support strategic research goals and direction across multiple disciplinesRecommends expansion or curtailment of projects and programs on the basis of experimental results or scientific informationDelivers results that have an impact on company performance strategically, financially, and operationallyIs a proven leader whose expertise is sought after by the external communityActs as a role model for a culture of responsible risk-taking and curiosityEncourages and develops this capability in others and is an active mentor for developing scientific leadership and excellence at all levelsIdentifies, initiates, and leads strategic collaborations within and outside the company to drive long-term value to the businessProvides effective coaching and feedback to help develop team members and colleagues within and outside of departmentMaintains a high level of contribution to the scientific literature through publishing / presentations / patentsDevelop programs to systematically identify and validate novel targets and progress drug discovery efforts in immunology and cardiovascular diseaseDevelop opportunities to combine cutting edge technologies, drug discovery and therapeutic area expertise to develop new programs in immunology and/or cardiovascular diseaseParticipate and help lead external collaborations with academic and biotechnology groups to help progress our target and drug discovery effortsIdentify and champion opportunities for collaboration across BMS expertiseQualifications & ExperienceBasic Qualifications:Master's Degree20+ years of academic and / or industry experienceOrPh.D. or equivalent advanced degree in the Life Sciences15+ years of academic and / or industry experience10+ years of leadership experience preferredPreferred Qualifications:PhD and a minimum of 15+ years of experience, ideally in an industry setting.10+ years of leadership experienceDemonstrated experience and success in immunology and/or cardiovascular drug discovery, application of a variety of approaches in target validation, high throughput biology and drug discoveryBroad knowledge in immunology and/or cardiovascular biology and demonstrated interest and ability to rapidly learn expertise and contribute to new areas of research and disease areasExperience leading a diverse set of scientific programs and cross functional teamsExperience and ability to lead directly within an organization and across internal and external indirect relationshipsExcellent communication skills, enthusiasm work in a highly matrixed team environment and with vigorous open scientific exchange are essentialExcellent interpersonal, management and mentorship skills and comfort and experience managing across diverse expertise and culturesStrong ability to challenge the status quo as well as a drive to make others successful#LI-OnsiteIf you come across a role that intrigues you but doesn't perfectly line up with your resume, we encourage you to apply anyway. Additional incentive cash and stock opportunities (based on eligibility) may be available. The starting pay rate takes into account characteristics of the job, such as required skills, where the job is performed, the employee's work schedule, job-related knowledge, and experience.
