Advanced Practice Provider (APP/PA/NP)-Inpatient Procedural Sedation Adult Acute Care

Overview The University of Virginia Medical Center is seeking an Advanced Practice Provider (APP)—either an Adult Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) or Physician Assistant (PA)—to join our Inpatient Procedural Sedation Service. This hybrid service provides moderate sedation to adult inpatients throughout the medical center, supporting a wide variety of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. The APP evaluates patients, develops individualized sedation plans, and delivers procedural sedation in a safe and effective manner. This is a day/evening position with a dynamic mix of fixed-location sedation care and a roving/mobile service to meet patients where they are within the hospital. Responsibilities Perform comprehensive pre-sedation assessments, including history, physical exam, ASA classification, and airway risk evaluation. Develop and implement sedation plans tailored to individual patient needs, clinical indications, and procedural requirements. Administer moderate sedation and monitor patients before, during, and after procedures in accordance with UVA protocols and safety standards. Serve as a procedural sedation expert and liaison to collaborating procedural teams. Document all clinical findings, sedation plans, medications administered, and patient responses in the EMR. Provide post-sedation evaluation and ensure safe recovery and hand-off. Participate in service development, quality improvement initiatives, and clinical education related to procedural sedation. Collaborate closely with anesthesiology, proceduralists, nursing, and other multidisciplinary teams. Maintain proficiency in sedation pharmacology, airway management, and emergency response. Service Model Hybrid Service Design Fixed Sedation Suite: A centralized location within the medical center where patients are brought for sedation. Mobile Sedation Team: Delivers bedside procedural sedation across inpatient units for patients unable to travel or when procedures are performed in-unit. Works in conjunction with the medical director, administrative management, nursing and other interprofessional team members to facilitate patient care and management throughout the health care system. Exercises independent judgment in assessment, diagnosis and initiation of medical processes within credentialing and privileges at UVA Health System. Performs and documents comprehensive health histories and physical assessments, including initiation of CPR or other emergency therapy as needed. Formulates diagnoses, identifies problems and health risk profiles, documents and communicates with the health care team. Performs, orders, and interprets diagnostic studies, such as x-rays and laboratory tests, in consultation with peers and colleagues. Orders medications, treatments and therapies in accordance with Virginia Prescriptive regulations. Requests consultations and initiates referrals to other health care providers, including specialists when needed. Evaluates and analyzes patient responses to disease processes and therapies. Provides information, education and support to patients/families regarding disease processes and treatment plans, facilitating communication between patients/families and the health care team. Participates in on-call responsibilities as appropriate and as determined by the department or unit. Manages patients in accordance with established UVA Medical Center and UVA UPG policies and procedures. Reports births, deaths, outbreaks of communicable diseases, and other information critical to public health in a timely manner as required by law. Meets quality standards as determined by the Medical Director and/or UVA Health System. May serve on select committees and participate in clinical education of students, interns, and residents as appropriate. Participates in group, peer and other review activities as requested. Prepares and attends to reports, claims, and correspondence necessary to the performance of professional services. Promotes the professional practice of the advanced practice group by serving as a clinical resource to nursing, medical and allied health care practitioners. Follows policies and procedures, including those of UVA Health System, CMS and other contracted payers. Accurately assigns CPT and ICD-10 codes. Updates practice through continuing education by attending conferences, rounds, lectures, journal clubs and regional/national professional conferences. Seeks professional development opportunities to enhance practice, including developing and presenting educational programs. Performs other duties as assigned that are commensurate with professional service. Minimum Requirements Education: Graduate of an accredited graduate program in nursing (APN/NP) or physician assistant program with a master’s degree. Experience: Department and unit specific. Licensure: Licensure as an Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, CRNA, or CNM) as set by the state of Virginia. If Nurse Practitioner, licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in Virginia is required. Must maintain credentialing and licensing requirements of UVA Health System, the Virginia Board of Medicine or Nursing, and appropriate certifying bodies. BLS required. PALS/NRP as required for the position. ACLS as required by position. Physical Demands: Standing for prolonged periods, bending/stooping, reaching, repetitive keyboard use; ability to lift/push/pull 50–100 lbs; exposure to noise, radiation, blood/body fluids, and infectious diseases as applicable. Compensation: The starting base rate for this role is $95,000 per year. Total compensation will be determined by qualifications, experience, and education.
