Police Officer

Job Summary Police Officer's perform responsible protective service work involving a variety of general or support duty police assignments; does related work as required. Much of the work is performed under emergency conditions and involves considerable personal hazard. Work is performed under regular supervision. Qualifications Basic Law Enforcement Training in the State of North Carolina, OR two years of full‑time sworn officer experience out of state, OR two of the last five years as a Military Police Officer. Individuals currently attending Basic Law Enforcement Training in North Carolina will be considered. Associate’s Degree: 2.5% additional; Bachelor’s Degree: 5% additional; Master’s Degree: 7.5% additional. Additional 1% per year up to 15 years of relevant experience. Driver’s license valid in North Carolina; Basic Law Enforcement certificate issued by the State; CPR, MDT‑DCI, Radar and Intoxilizer certifications. Must meet and maintain minimum training and experience requirements for the position as established by the department and the State of North Carolina. Skills: knowledge of police methods, practices and procedures; some knowledge of city geography; ability to understand oral and written instructions; ability to write clear reports; courteous but firm public interaction; situational analysis; firearms proficiency and automobile operation; relationship building with colleagues and public. The hiring range is $45,377.49 to $55,587.43. Responsibilities On an assigned shift, operate a patrol vehicle or walk to observe for violations of traffic laws, suspicious activities or persons and disturbances of law and order. Interview victims and witnesses to obtain additional necessary information regarding crime, accident, violation, etc. Investigate crimes, collect evidence and conduct searches; investigate traffic accidents. Respond to radio dispatches and answer calls and complaints; issue traffic citations; serve warrants, summons, etc.; complete arrest records. Make arrests and testify in court; prepare reports. Provide police escorts, direct traffic; perform residential and commercial checks. Participate in a variety of in‑service and special training programs. Respond to and investigate domestic disputes; assist other law enforcement agencies when requested or assigned. Ensure all evidence is properly tagged and logged. May be assigned to crime prevention, investigations, SWAT, community response, traffic, juvenile, or related areas as specified. Perform related tasks as required.
