Physician (Neurology)

Summary

The Millington VA Community Based Outpatient Clinic, Millington, TN is recruiting for a Neurology Physician to serve as a full-time Specialty Care physician. The position is accountable to the Chief of Specialty Care, ensuring effective delivery of state-of-the-art care and meeting compliance standards.

Duties

• Clinical practice, supervising and teaching Neurology fellows, residents, and medical students.
• Providing consultation on neurological disease states for diagnosis and treatment in inpatient and outpatient settings.
• Sharing attending call responsibilities with other Neurologists for nights, weekends, and holiday calls as needed; rounding with the team in inpatient settings.
• Leading and managing the Neurology team, including fellows, residents, students, pharmacists, and mid-level providers, on inpatient or clinical service.
• Collaborating and supervising; serving as Section Chief, Neurology.
• Recognizing patients appropriate for referral or consultation with collaborating physicians; coordinating consultations through personal, telephone, or electronic contact.
• Co-signing resident and student notes for admission history, physical examination, admission plan, daily care plans, and discharge notes; writing discharge orders with physician concurrence.
• Conducting clinical assessment and evaluation— inpatients and outpatients; managing assigned veteran patients; ordering and interpreting labs and diagnostic studies; ordering consultations and referrals; patient follow-up; health promotion and disease prevention; patient, family, and staff education and counseling; clinical research (requires separate approval).
• Performing administrative activities such as performance improvement, research, and non-clinical tasks; initiating changes to inpatient care programs based on current research findings.
• Other duties as assigned by the supervising physician or designee related to scope of practice.

Requirements and Conditions of Employment

• U.S. citizenship; non-citizens may be appointed only when it is impossible to recruit qualified citizens per VA policy.
• Full and unrestricted state license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, or DC.
• Proficiency in written and spoken English.
• Completion of background/security investigation.
• Subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use; those refusing test will be denied employment.
• Selective Service registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
• Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is required.
• May be required to serve a probationary period.

Qualifications

Basic requirements:

• United States citizenship (non-citizens only if no qualified citizens available).
• Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from an approved U.S. medical school; foreign degrees must meet ECFMG eligibility.
• Current, full and unrestricted license to practice.
• Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to board certification. Accepted residency types include approved ACGME or AOA programs, one-year internship or transitional year followed by two years of independent practice, and non-US residency programs followed by at least three years of verified independent practice in the U.S.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Education

• Doctor of Medicine or equivalent from an accredited institution (LCME, COCA, or ECFMG).

License and Certification

Full and unrestricted medical license in any U.S. state, territory, or DC.

Continuing Medical Education

Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement; must be full-time with board certification.
