The DHHS Data Office is seeking a Data Visualization Engineer to join our growing Data & Analytics team. In this role, you will transform complex datasets into meaningful, visually compelling dashboards and reports that support decision-making across the organization. This position is ideal for early-career professionals with a passion for analytics, visualization, and solving real-world problems that make a difference for the people of Nebraska. This is an on-site, full-time/permanent role in Lincoln. Not eligible to be a contracted or remote position. The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services does not sponsor or transfer non-immigrant work visas for this position or accept STEM OPT (form i-983) at any time.

Examples of Work

Key Responsibilities

• Develop engaging, accurate, and user-friendly dashboards, reports, and data visualizations that support business and operational insights.
• Work closely with data consumers and subject matter experts (SMEs) to understand business requirements, define metrics, and ensure visualizations accurately represent underlying data.
• Analyze, interpret, and organize large datasets to uncover trends, patterns, and actionable insights.
• Validate data quality, accuracy, and completeness across various data sources and platforms.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Data Engineers, BI Developers, and business partners, to design and deliver analytic solutions.
• Participate in Agile delivery processes such as daily stand-ups, sprint planning, and review sessions.
• Monitor existing dashboards and visualizations for issues, performance concerns, or data discrepancies; troubleshoot and resolve as needed.
• Build professional and technical skills through mentorship, structured training, and hands-on project experience.

Requirements/Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Experience, education, or training in coding computer applications.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in data Analytics, Information Systems, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field; equivalent experience considered.
• Foundational experience working with data visualization tools such as Power BI or Tableau.
• Exposure to cloud-based data platforms such as Azure, Databricks, or Snowflake.
• Experience (coursework, internship, or personal projects) building dashboards or reports.
• Familiarity with Agile methodologies or project-based delivery.
• Understanding of data quality principles and validation methods

Other: Position is located on-site at the Nebraska State Office Building in Lincoln.

• Basic understanding of datasets, data models, SQL concepts, or analytical workflows.
• Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills with the ability to translate data into clear insights.
• Effective communication skills and ability to collaborate with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Curiosity, eagerness to learn, and enthusiasm for solving problems through data.
