Therapeutic Radiologic Technologist (Radiation Oncology Service)

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval determines award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) after review by the EDRP program office. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply. Qualifications To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement. United States Citizenship; non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: Individuals must have successfully completed a program in therapeutic radiologic technology, evidenced by a certificate, an associate's degree or higher accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology or other accredited bodies recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, and the subsequent completion of a 12‑month ED‑accredited program in therapeutic radiologic technology. Public Law 97‑35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 C.F.R. Part 75. They must have completed an educational program meeting or exceeding the standards described in that regulation, be accredited by an organization recognized by the ED, and be radiation therapists certified by the ARRT in Radiation Therapy (T). Certification: All applicants must be certified in therapeutic radiologic technology by the ARRT in Radiation Therapy (ARRT(T)). Loss of Certification: A TRT who fails to maintain required certification must be removed from the occupation, which may result in termination of employment. English Language Proficiency: TRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English. See 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f). Grade Determinations: GS‑10. Experience: At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Candidates must demonstrate the following KSAs: Independent machine warm‑up procedures and interpretation of output levels compared with established thresholds, adhering to radiation safety and quality assurance principles. Independent patient chart reviews using an electronic medical record and the Record and Verify System or similar treatment delivery systems. Independent execution of basic and complex CT simulations, including operating the CT equipment, designing custom immobilization, obtaining optimal imaging, data transfer for planning, and accurate patient documentation. Use of a Linac’s On‑Board Imaging system to interpret complex images. Performing assignments that, at full performance level, involve significant scope and complexity, comprising at least 25 % of time. Advanced staff TRT responsibilities, including emergency on‑call treatments, simple Monitor Unit calculations, and other advanced treatment modalities. Compliance with safety, cleanliness, and patient assistance duties. Preferred Experience: Performing procedures for consultation, simulation, treatment planning, and delivery, including contrast administration. BLS Certification for Healthcare Providers. Physical Requirements: Light lifting (under 15 pounds), use of fingers, both hands required, walking, standing, repeated bending, color discrimination, hearing (aid may be permitted), mental and emotional stability, visual acuity 20/30 corrected. Environmental Factors: Excessive noise – intermittent, working closely with others, working alone. Duties Therapeutic Radiologic Technologists deliver prescribed high doses of therapeutic radiation for treatment of cancer and abnormal cell growths. Assist in tumor localization, participate in treatment planning, and deliver ionizing radiation as prescribed by radiation oncologists. Use a linear accelerator to perform treatments. Conduct consultations, simulations, treatment planning and delivery; keep current of any changes. Maintain detailed and accurate daily records of technical, legal and statistical components of treatment. Schedule treatments to optimize linear accelerator times while allowing flexibility for emergency treatments. Deliver prescribed therapeutic radiation, capture patient identification, set up tattoos, take SSD readings, obtain isocenter verification films, perform port film imaging, document chart changes, observe patient condition daily, recognize need for psychosocial support, refer to staff, reinforce oncologist recommendations, and perform quality control measurements of treatment machines. Identify patients per required identification protocols before simulations and treatments, perform sign‑out. Communicate with medical staff on other floors/units to provide quality patient care; follow HIPAA guidelines for patient privacy. Record daily information into CPRS/VISTA regarding treatments and doses. Practice radiation safety protocols to limit exposure, maintain ALARA principles. Operate daylight film processors, contact engineer for issues, maintain treatment rooms and equipment clean and safe, keep supplies adequate, notify supervisors of equipment problems, report to physicians if patient care is impacted. Perform irregular‑hour emergency treatments during off‑hours, weekends, and holidays; must be available to arrive within two hours of notification. Collaborate with radiation oncologists, dosimetrists, nursing and clerical staff to develop teamwork and accomplish department goals. Keep current with developments and maintain licensing and continuing‑education requirements; stay informed on machine characteristics. Operate equipment to determine correct dose and field uniformity; provide compassionate care; report adverse conditions or occupational hazards promptly. Participate in reviewing, revising, or authoring policies and procedures as needed. Perform accurate charge capture, documentation, and CPT coding; other duties as assigned.
