Refrigeration Mechanic
The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for Refrigeration Mechanic (PW FM Repairs & Maintenance). This announcement will remain open until a sufficient number of applications are received and may close at any time. The Broward County Public Works Department/Facilities Management Division provides program and administrative management of maintenance and repairs of nearly 200 County buildings and facilities as well as roads and grounds, utilities, minor renovations and capital maintenance, cleaning, paid parking, security and real property management of all County facilities and properties.
The Refrigeration Mechanic position performs a variety of journey-level work in the maintenance, installation, repair and inspection of complex refrigeration equipment, including air conditioning systems and chillers. Work involves the servicing of air-conditioning systems and units, refrigerators, water cooling systems and related equipment utilized in a wide variety of County facilities and buildings. Work includes determining work methods and procedures and frequent participation in refrigeration assignments, as well as responsibility for the quality of work produced.
In accordance with Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI)/Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) security policies, the FBI/FDLE Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Access Security Policy requires that all criminal justice agencies (including Broward Sheriff's Office, State Attorney's Office, and Medical Examiner's Office) have documentation of enhanced background screening on file for all personnel who may conduct any type of unescorted work or duties within any location that Criminal Justice Information (CJI) is housed (i.e., any type of computer or computer system/network with direct access to CJI). Therefore, this position may require: (1) state of residency and (2) passing and maintaining a Level 2 Background Screening.
Performs skilled work in mechanical refrigeration in the installation, maintenance and repair of refrigeration equipment, air conditioning systems and centrifugal chillers. Works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: Requires two (2) years in journey level refrigeration mechanic or closely related experience.
Special Certifications and Licenses: Universal Certification from the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency). Possess and maintain a valid Florida Class E Driver's License based on area of assignment.
Preferences: Completion of a recognized program in vocational training for the mechanical trade. Industry certification by a nationally recognized certifying body such as NATE or HVAC Excellence. Certifications from the American Council for Accredited Certification (ACAC) or Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) or equivalent from a State of Florida recognized certifying entity: ACAC CMR - Council-certified Microbial Remediator; IICRC AMRT - Applied Microbial Remediation Technician or IICRC WRT - Water Damage Restoration Technician. At least five (5) years of experience and functional knowledge working with building automation systems. At least two (2) years of Duct Cleaning experience in a commercial environment. At least five (5) years verifiable journey-level experience in the operation, inspection, maintenance, and repair of chilled water plant systems and associated equipment.
Duties and Responsibilities: Troubleshoots a variety of HVAC equipment/system problems in order to identify the nature and extent of the maintenance/repair problem, identify the type of repair/preventive measure needed, identify potential safety issues, and/or find the fault in the system. Obtains materials, supplies, and equipment needed to complete assigned HVAC project/work order. Estimates/determines materials, supplies, equipment, and time needed to complete assigned HVAC work order/project in order to facilitate scheduling, identify approximate costs and staffing needs, identify type/amount of materials needed, and/or ensure materials, supplies, and equipment needed are available. Performs a variety of routine HVAC maintenance/repairs in order to maintain facility/equipment in operating condition, ensure safe work environment, and/or ensure HVAC service is not interrupted. Performs scheduled preventive maintenance on a variety of HVAC equipment/services in order to identify potential problems, minimize need for emergency repairs, and/or maximize the useful life of the equipment. Prepares written materials or uses electronic device/computer/PDA (i.e., work order status, materials request, time and attendance, repair status, activity logs, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities and/or conveying information. Performs the overhaul and servicing of refrigeration units by checking the repair, replacement, and adjustment of worn or broken parts on condensers, compressors, and water and vacuum pumps and the testing of refrigeration equipment for refrigerant leaks; performs the removal and replacement of motors, pumps, shafts and bearings. Checks gauges and makes inspection for preventive maintenance; reads gauges and instruments, determines temperature, velocity and humidity factors using air and water temperature gauges; adjusts mechanisms such as valves, controls and pumps to control level of fluid, pressure and temperature; bleeds contaminants from system and charges with specified amount and type of refrigerant; checks gauges and makes periodic preventative maintenance inspections. Maintains up-to-date records on job orders; maintains effective and efficient working conditions; tests refrigeration equipment for refrigerant leaks; removes and installs motors, thermostats and humidistats; adjusts expansion valves; adjusts or changes belts; replaces gaskets, hinges, and hardware. Repairs or adjusts valves, piping connections, fittings and couplings; performs the rebuilding, repairs and painting of wood and metal cooling towers and fans. Performs related work as assigned.

Physical Demands: Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, stretching, or lifting all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or exceptional skill, adeptness, and speed in the use of fingers, hands, or limbs in tasks involving very close tolerances or limits of accuracy.
