The Department of Taxes' Compliance Division is seeking a motivated professional who wants to make a meaningful impact by conducting audits that ensure the fair and accurate administration of Vermont's tax laws. In this role, you'll review taxpayer records, promote voluntary compliance, and help Vermonters understand their obligations. Key responsibilities include:
The Compliance Division is responsible for promoting and ensuring Vermont taxpayer compliance, with a focus on early intervention, education, outreach, and fairness. Our team includes auditors, tax examiners, analysts, tax collection officers, and support staff. Background Checks
This position will primarily support the Department of Taxes. Candidates must agree to be fingerprinted and pass a background check to be eligible for this position, which will involve access to sensitive federal tax information. Background checks are required by the Internal Revenue Service and are authorized under Vermont law. 3 V.S.A. § 241. In accordance with VDT Standard Operating Procedure 2018-01, Background Investigations, Vermont and national criminal record checks will be conducted on all candidates. Environmental Factors Work is performed in a standard office setting. An Auditor II may be sitting or standing, most frequently using a computer and phone. There may be very occasional light lifting, and general walking around the office setting. Some fieldwork requiring travel may be required. Audit work and review of records may also be performed in a home and/or central office location as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree or higher in accounting, business management, public administration , mathematics, finance or a related field.
OR Four (4) or more years' experience in tax examination/preparation, accounting, auditing, business administration or related field.
OR Two (2) years or more of experience as Tax Field Auditor I or Tax Auditor I; or Three (3) years or more of experience as a Tax Examiner III or Tax Analyst II or higher with the State Of Vermont Department Of Taxes. Preferred Qualifications Certified Public Accountant. Experience in a government audit role. Special Requirements Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position.
