Job Description The Registered Nurse (Hospital-Based) is a competent registered nurse that will deliver nursing care to patients of varying age groups by utilizing the nursing process and nursing practice standards. The RN uses: Nursing Practice Competencies to intervene to achieve safe, optimal patient and family centered care outcomes; Leadership Competencies to coordinate patient care and communicate with the care team; Professional Profile Competencies to develop professionally as a life-long learner; and Practice Outcomes Competencies to evaluate care based on evidence, the UofL Health quality model, and patient safety goals. The RN demonstrates competency caring for complex patients and participates on the care team to improve the quality of care in the clinical area. Essential Functions Conducts systematic, continuous and comprehensive assessments of patient health status from admission to discharge, collaborating with the healthcare team, patient and family; care addresses age, gender, spiritual, cultural, physical, psychosocial and patient preferences and proactively uses safety surveillance to prevent adverse outcomes. Independently administers medications per licensure authority, assesses and reassesses effects, documents administration promptly, and adheres to patient safety guidelines. Plans care in collaboration with patient and family using current scientific knowledge and care standards within the nursing interventions and outcomes framework and national patient safety goals; constructs individualized, age-specific plans; integrates data from the multidisciplinary care team to ensure continuity and patient teaching. Identifies and prioritizes patient problems based on assessment data, safety considerations, goals and preferences, and nursing interventions and medical plan of care. Implements nursing interventions to meet patient and family health care needs; demonstrates competent skills, clinical judgment and appropriate delegation to promote safety and achieve outcomes. Assesses and evaluates patient and family teaching, ensuring it is age-appropriate and culturally sensitive, from admission to discharge. Evaluates care by reviewing patient/family responses and revising the plan with the care team to promote desired outcomes; recognizes care variances and mitigates adverse events. Advocates for patient and family rights and preferences; prepares for discharge and seeks feedback to improve satisfaction outcomes. Collaborates with unlicensed assistive personnel per regulatory and legal requirements to assure safe patient care delivery. Other Functions Demonstrates professional conduct and accountability for actions and outcomes. Orients new team members and supervises students. May act as relief charge nurse when needed. Maintains professional competency through continuing education and licensure; participates in evidence-based practice and quality improvement activities. Communicates constructively within the healthcare team; participates in peer review and feedback to improve practice. Performs duties cost-effectively while maintaining quality; complies with policies and standards; adheres to HIPAA requirements. Performs other duties as assigned. Education Associate’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited nursing program is required. All new-hire Associate Degree RNs (new graduates and experienced) are required to start an approved BSN program within one year of hire and complete it within three years (required). Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited nursing program is preferred. Experience All new RN graduates will participate in the Nurse Residency program and must successfully complete all activities (required). Two years of hospital patient care experience is preferred. Licensure Current KY RN licensure or compact license with privileges to work in Kentucky (required). Certification Basic Life Support (BLS) accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) (required). Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) (may be required for specific clinical areas). Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) (may be required for specific clinical areas).
