Firmware / PLC Software Test Engineer

Durham, NC | Onsite | 12-Month Contract

We’re hiring a PLC Software Test Engineer for a client building automated electromechanical systems. You’ll be the independent quality check on PLC and controls software before it ships. You’ll test against requirements, break things on purpose, find the defects, and confirm the software is ready for release.

What you’ll do

• Write and run PLC test procedures, test cases, and verification protocols from functional and system requirements
• Test hands-on with real equipment, test stations, simulators, and lab setups
• Run functional, regression, integration, negative, boundary, and fault-injection testing
• Push the system into abnormal states: sensor failures, comms faults, interlocks, sequencing errors
• Verify alarms, fault handling, recovery sequences, diagnostics, and logging
• Document, reproduce, and track defects through fix and retest
• Work with PLC developers while keeping an independent test perspective
• Support root-cause work across software, electrical, sensors, actuators, and motion control
• Maintain traceability, test evidence, and release readiness documentation

What you bring

• Bachelor’s in Electrical, Computer, Controls, or Software Engineering, or related field
• 5+ years in PLC software testing, controls engineering, industrial automation, firmware testing, or system verification
• Ability to read PLC logic, sequences, state machines, interlocks, and fault handling
• Hands-on experience with sensors, actuators, motor drives, servos, safety devices, and industrial communications
• Strong troubleshooting across software, electrical, mechanical, and integration issues

Nice to have

• Electrical engineering background with control panels, I/O, and wiring
• Ability to read schematics, wiring diagrams, and I/O drawings
• Experience with version control, defect tracking, requirements management, and release processes
