Lead Veterinarian

AREA CHIEF OF STAFF

Pay range (full‑time): $155,716 – $224,923 annually. Variable pay may also be available based on production in all states except Puerto Rico.

SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSE AND FUNCTION

The Area Chief of Staff leads, develops, and manages associate veterinarians across hospitals to attract, develop, engage, and retain doctors who deliver quality care and achieve hospital performance measures. This position drives culture and delivery of quality care by the veterinary provider team—DVM, CVT, VA—to ensure each pet receives consistent care aligned with our six domains of safety, effectiveness, patient/client center‑edness, timeliness, efficiency, and equity.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Live and exemplify the Five Principles of Mars, Inc. within self and team. Act as Responsible Veterinarian for Veterinary and Pharmacy Board Permits and manage controlled substance inventory for relief doctors. Own doctor engagement and retention, assess risk, implement strategies, and foster a supportive community culture. Provide medical leadership, creating an inclusive work environment in partnership with practice managers. Validate clinical skillset and quality alignment of doctors, assistants, and technicians through record reviews, audits, and safety event reviews. Serve clinical functions as required, with time allocation determined by hospital needs and productivity. Oversee coaching of newly hired veterinarians, ensuring mastery of Banfield quality standards and workflows. Recruit veterinary talent, act as a brand ambassador, and deliver a positive experience to externs, students, and candidates. Help doctors meet productivity goals via high‑quality medicine, preventive care, and client experience. Lead hospital KPI delivery and partner with practice managers to develop and revise plans for target achievement. Build a leadership bench and succession plan for the hospital pod. Ensure compliance with clinical essentials, regulations, and industry standards through audits and reviews. Champion preventive care culture, driving wellness plan growth and retention. Create a “yes” culture enhancing client service and meeting experience scorecard goals; resolve client complaints promptly. Manage medical equipment inventory and new request process with Veterinary Quality leadership. Deliver high‑level veterinary care to every pet in a professional, ethical manner. Establish trust with clients through preventive care delivery, diagnostics, treatment plans, and follow‑up. Perform additional duties as assigned.

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Work at a computer for long periods. Project timelines may require more than 40 hours per week. Must have verbal, reading, writing, and speaking English proficiency. Ability to follow written, oral, or diagram instructions and solve variable problems. Require ambulatory skills to perform duties at hospital. Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and lift up to 50 pounds. Good hand‑eye coordination, dexterity, and visual acuity for equipment use. Noise level is moderately high. Exposure to pets that may bite or scratch, anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, and controlled substances. Some travel required for hospital assistance, vendor visits, and education. Banfield policies do not supersede legal responsibilities or medical judgment. DEA Candidate must obtain a state‑controlled substance and federal DEA license within 3 months of employment, unless otherwise required by state. USDA Accredited by the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service within 3 months of employment.

EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND/OR TRAINING

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent foreign degree. Veterinary license in good standing or eligibility for licensure with all applicable state veterinary boards. Three years of small‑animal medicine and surgery practice experience.
