Operating Room / Surgical Services We are a fast‑paced, exciting department with a culture of teamwork among nurses, physicians, CSTs, anesthesia techs, and surgical support techs. Patient population includes orthopedics, trauma, colorectal, vascular, neuro, GYN, ENT, plastics, urology, and general procedures. Shift: Part‑time days; 2‑12 hour shifts per week. Call requirement: approximately 1‑3 call shifts per month; must live within 30 minutes of the hospital. Requires 2 years of recent OR experience; trauma experience preferred. Job Summary The Operating Room (OR) Registered Nurse (RN) is a licensed professional who uses the BSWH nursing model to coordinate patient care. Using the nursing process, the RN assesses the patient, identifies nursing diagnoses, develops and implements individualized care plans, and evaluates patient responses. The RN promotes safe passage for patients by applying knowledge of patient needs, helps patients transition through healthcare without preventable complications or delays, and delegates interventions based on the Texas Nursing Practice Act, patient condition, and employee competencies. Essential Functions Of The Role Clinical Judgment: Conduct accurate assessments, identify and prioritize patient and family needs, develop, implement, and evaluate the nursing care plan, and modify the plan to meet outcomes. Clinical Inquiry: Evaluate the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice, implement evidence‑based practice changes, and participate in quality improvement initiatives. Caring Practices: Create an attentive, helpful, safe, and therapeutic environment; develop therapeutic relationships, manage pain, and promote healing while preventing unnecessary suffering. Response to Diversity: Acknowledge and integrate the patient’s and family’s unique cultural, belief, gender, race, ethnicity, lifestyle, and values into the care plan. Advocacy and Moral Agency: Protect confidentiality, autonomy, dignity, and rights; represent concerns and develop individualized plans reflecting values and goals; identify and resolve ethical and clinical concerns. Facilitation of Learning: Facilitate learning for patients, families, nursing staff, and the healthcare team; use education to support informed health‑care decisions and promote health and disease prevention. Partnership: Work collaboratively with colleagues and community; delegate tasks and ensure timely follow‑up. Systems Thinking: Employ strategies and resources for problem‑solving; consider safety, effectiveness, and efficiency in planning and delivering patient care. Key Success Factors Knowledge and expertise of nursing and patient care standards and procedures. Understanding of laws, rules, and regulations; competence in standards and guidelines of certifying and accrediting bodies; adherence to hospital and unit protocols, policies, and procedures. Knowledge of medical terminology, health promotion, risk reduction, disease prevention, and medication effects. Comprehension of medical and professional nursing ethics and patient privacy rights. Clarity in verbal and written communication skills. Social skills for interacting with diverse constituencies. Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills. Monitoring changes in patients’ medical conditions and communicating them to nursing staff and providers. Ability to provide age‑specific, quality, patient‑centered care through the nursing process and standards; respect human diversity; tailor care plans as needed. Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office, scheduling and payroll systems, electronic medical documentation, and email.
