DevOps Engineer

BT-296 – DevOps Engineer Location: McLean, VA (fully on-site, no remote option) Responsibilities Deploy, operate, and maintain web services within the Sponsor’s AWS cloud environment (and potentially other cloud service providers in the future). Use infrastructure as code tools such as AWS CloudFormation and Terraform. Ensure that all development and modifications to existing Sponsor applications comply with Sponsor’s security, architectural policies, and regulations. Collaborate with stakeholders, including key stakeholders and other development teams; work within the Sponsor Project Manager’s priorities. Communicate technical concepts to non‑technical audiences. Identify, document, and communicate risks and mitigation plans across the system. Identify gaps and overlaps in existing and designed systems, analyze project needs for alternative solutions, and specify necessary layers, modules, and interactions. Review technical implementation strategies and plans, identify inconsistencies and opportunities for improvement, and report findings to the Sponsor PM. Document and maintain code, workflows, version control systems, task management tools, and issue tracking. Manage the developed systems’ lifecycle, including operating system upgrades, patches, security scans, and configuration changes. Set user permissions (including roles) and troubleshoot permission issues. Provide operations and maintenance of applications in the cloud infrastructure. Support Sponsor representatives in provisioning, engineering, and architecture activities related to applications. Implement changes to current applications and data pipelines as required by Sponsor, with Sponsor concurrence. Support the Sponsor Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) process. Continuously evaluate progress to ensure schedules are met. Assist the Sponsor’s product owner with program requirements assessment, risk mitigation, and issue resolution. Maintain a tracking system for issues and problems. Interface with stakeholders to ensure user stories are recorded and aligned. Coordinate stakeholder engagements, user‑requirement sessions, and training. Prepare meeting agendas and minutes. Track work requirements and action items to meet program deadlines. Collect, compile, evaluate, and publish information and statistical data for documents, reports, plans, and regulations. Deliver development requirements as requested by the Sponsor. Provide applications development and programming support to implement system‑level requirements. Maintain and enhance software solutions based on changing partner requirements, legislation, and policy. Stay current with emerging technologies and industry best practices. Conduct functionality testing for existing applications. Create and maintain an automated test environment in the Sponsor’s AWS environment using tools such as Selenium or comparable testing tools. Assist in technical documentation and design for meeting security requirements, ensuring compliance with Sponsor A&A processes. Develop applications and modifications to existing and new Sponsor applications in compliance with architectural guidelines and Authorization and Accreditation (A&A) processes. Qualifications Demonstrated experience with Agile/Scrum development methodologies in a fast‑paced, collaborative team environment. Experience working effectively in high‑performing, cross‑functional teams with multiple concurrent projects. Experience working directly with stakeholders to gather requirements, understand needs, and translate them into technical solutions with minimal oversight. Strong ownership mentality with commitment to code quality, testing, and documentation. Ability to context‑switch between projects and systems as priorities demand. Experience implementing and managing CI/CD pipelines with Jenkins. Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools; Terraform and CloudFormation. Experience with AWS services (EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda, VPC, IAM, CloudWatch). Experience with containerization such as Docker and Podman. Strong scripting proficiency in Bash and Python. Experience with database self‑hosting including installation, configuration, backup/recovery, high availability, and performance tuning using PostgreSQL and MySQL. Experience with monitoring, logging, and alerting systems such as Prometheus/Alertmanager and CloudWatch. Experience integrating and deploying diverse software systems: AWS cloud services, open‑source applications, COTS/GOTS products, and custom applications. Experience with networking, security, IAM policies, and AWS architecture best practices. Experience with Git‑based workflows, branching strategies, and version control best practices. Desired Skills Experience deploying and managing data platform components such as Apache Spark, Trino, Apache Ranger, Apache Iceberg, Apache Superset, or data catalogs. Experience with data lakehouse architectures and supporting infrastructure. Experience with secrets management solutions such as AWS Secrets Manager or Parameter Store. Experience with disaster recovery, backup strategies, and continuity planning. Familiarity with API gateways and modern microservices patterns. Experience with cost optimization practices in AWS. Experience with AI/ML workloads or model serving infrastructure. Experience mentoring team members on DevOps and cloud best practices. Experience with NoSQL databases such as DynamoDB or MongoDB. Experience with additional monitoring tools such as Grafana or ELK stack. Experience integrating Sponsor’s Enterprise services. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with both technical and non‑technical audiences. Core Competencies Cloud Services – Deploy, operate, and maintain web services within the Sponsor’s AWS cloud environment; demonstrated IaC experience including AWS CloudFormation. Web Application Programming – Strong problem‑solving skills, debugging, testing, troubleshooting complex web applications; experience developing modern web applications using JavaScript/TypeScript frameworks (Angular, React, or Vue); strong understanding of web‑application security best practices and usability principles. Scripting – Shell scripting such as Bash. Database Technologies – SQL and database technologies such as MySQL, DynamoDB, or SQL Server.
