The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs plays a vital role in evaluating both didactic and clinical education within the Dean's office at our institution. This position encompasses four primary areas: teaching, research, service, and administration. Reporting directly to the Dean, the individual in this role must hold a Ph.D. from an accredited institution in a relevant field. It is essential for the Associate Dean to stay updated in their educational discipline and to exhibit a strong track record in teaching and academic leadership within medical education. This is a non-tenured faculty role.

Position Requirements

To qualify for this position, candidates must possess a Ph.D. from an accredited institution in a suitable field. The Associate Dean must also remain current in their educational area and demonstrate substantial experience in teaching and academic leadership in medical education.

Duties and Responsibilities

The responsibilities of this role are categorized into four main areas: teaching, research, service, and administration.

Teaching
  • Develop and present an annual faculty development plan to the Dean.
  • Engage in teaching students within their area of expertise.
  • Conduct an annual review of COMLEX performance with faculty members.
  • Update COMLEX performance statistics on the institution's Fast Facts website each year.
  • Facilitate remediation for students who do not pass any section of COMLEX.
  • Provide student performance data to the Curriculum Committee to aid in course evaluations.
  • Support the Associate Dean for Curricular Integration and Faculty Development in assessing pre-clinical student performance.
  • Assist the Associate Dean for Clinical Education in evaluating clinical and post-rotation examination performance.
  • Help track residency placement outcomes, including surveys from residency program directors and alumni.
  • Oversee the Director of Assessment and assist the Dean in managing students on leave to ensure they remain on track for graduation and residency placement.
  • Support the Associate Dean for Clinical Education in maintaining the Residency Placement Match Tool and provide faculty development for its use in student advising.
Research & Scholarly Activity
  • Engage in and mentor clinical faculty in educational and/or research activities, with documentation through publications in peer-reviewed journals, presentations at conferences, or grant applications.
  • Supervise student research projects funded by the Dean's Office.
  • Assist faculty in the Department of Clinical Education in advancing their research initiatives.
Service
  • Serve on university and college committees as assigned, including the Curriculum Committee and Clinical and Preclinical Promotions Committees.
  • Act as an interviewer for Admissions.
  • Deliver Admissions presentations on behalf of the Dean.
  • Participate in the AZCOM segment of Orientation.
  • Contribute to the planning of graduation events for AZCOM students.
  • Present at faculty development programs.
  • Assist the Dean and team members with annual Medical Student Performance Evaluations.
  • Represent faculty at educational meetings.
Administration
  • Supervise and develop faculty and staff within the Department of Assessment.
  • Support preceptor development through feedback from the Preceptor Report Card.
  • Advise faculty in the Department of Assessment regarding promotion and rank advancement.
  • Manage and develop the Department of Assessment budget on an annual basis.
  • Conduct annual performance evaluations for all faculty and staff reporting to the Associate Dean.
  • Assist in updating the institution's catalog and website annually.
  • Contribute to the preparation of annual AACOM reports.
  • Support the Dean in ensuring compliance with accreditation standards, including all necessary reporting.
  • Assist with annual outcomes assessment programming.
  • Oversee exit and alumni surveys.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean.
