Contract Principal

Alabama Department of Education

Job Summary

JOB GOALS: To serve as the instructional and administrative leader of the school To work with staff, students, and community to ensure a high-quality educational program


To formulate and accomplish the school and district goals to promote an environment of high expectations for staff and students.

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

REPORTS TO: Superintendent

SUPERVISES: All assigned School personnel

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. At least a Master's degree from an accredited college or university
  2. Possess and maintain valid Alabama certification as a school administrator
  3. At least three (3) years' teaching experience
  4. At least one (1) year of leadership experience in school administration or equivalent supervisory role
  5. Possess and maintain a valid Alabama Professional Educator Certificate
  6. Knowledge of curriculum development, effective classroom practices, and professional development
  7. Good public relations skills
  8. Ability to understand the unique needs and learning characteristics of students of the school assigned
  9. Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457
  10. Ability to supervise and attend events after school hours
  11. Knowledge and ability to use and facilitate the use of various forms of education technology and assist in instructional practices
  12. Superior leadership, collaboration, and interpersonal skills and ability to be an instructional leader across multiple settings.
  13. Ability to work collaboratively as a team member with large and/or diverse groups.
  14. Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups, including, but not limited to, students, faculty, staff, parents, and community members.
  15. Knowledge and ability to use and facilitate the use of various forms of education technology.
  16. Ability to assist with instructional techniques.
  17. Ability to organize, delegate and supervise others effectively.
  18. Ability to evaluate and provide constructive feedback to faculty and staff as assigned.
  19. Ability to use group dynamics within the context of cultural diversity.
  20. Ability to collaboratively plan with faculty, staff, and system officials for school improvement and increased student achievement.
  21. Knowledge of educational trends, data analysis, and research.
  22. Knowledge of curriculum and principles of learning.
  23. Ability to use technology for communication, presentations, research, data analysis, budgeting, record keeping, reporting, scheduling, and other job responsibilities as required.
  24. Knowledge of student behavior management.
  25. Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
  26. Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities.
  27. Proficiency in oral, written, and electronic communications with the ability to produce, lead, and deliver presentations to various stakeholders.
  28. Proficiency in collecting data, disaggregating data, preparing summaries of data, and communicating data to specific groups.
  29. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Demonstrates support for the school system, its purpose, direction, and priorities.
  2. Provides administrative leadership for all staff and students in assigned school.
  3. Conducts staff meetings and training to promote efficient functioning of the school, the curriculum, the athletic program, and the behavior program.
  4. Demonstrates the ability to multitask, to delegate appropriately, and to prioritize tasks efficiently.
  5. Maintains confidentiality of any Board of Education business, its staff, and its students.
  6. Demonstrates the principles and practice of effective leadership.
  7. Demonstrates and models regular and predictable attendance.
  8. Demonstrates professionalism in appearance and in attitude at all times.
  9. Demonstrates the ability to use technology for communication, presentations, research, data analysis, budgeting, record keeping, reporting, scheduling, and other job responsibilities as required.
  10. Collaborates with the Director of Curriculum in following testing guidelines, aligning school ACIP with district goals, providing counseling services to students as needed, and all other items that may fall under the Director's supervision.
  11. Collaborates with the Director of Curriculum and the Director of Educational Services on matters related to 504, PST, RTI, ARI, curriculum, observations, textbooks, staff interviews, staff evaluations, and all other items that may fall under the Directors' supervision.
  12. Collaborates with the Superintendent and Maintenance Department on matters related to maintenance, construction, repairs, athletic field issues, inventorying property, and all other items that may fall within this category.
  13. Collaborates with the Transportation Director on matters related to transportation.
  14. Collaborates with the Superintendent and appropriate staff on matters related to staff discipline, staff evaluations, personnel records and documentation, and all other items that may fall under human resources.
  15. Collaborates with the Director of Educational Services on matters related to Title funds, Title IX, any other federal funded programs, homeless students, ESL/migrant students, and all other items that may fall under the Director's supervision.
  16. Collaborates with the Superintendent and Director of Curriculum on matters related to student discipline, student attendance, student home visits, court referrals, hearings, drug testing, calendar, Code of Conduct, bullying/harassment complaints, out-of-zone students, and all other items that may fall under the area of student services.
  17. Collaborates with the Director of Educational Services on matters related to special education, IEPs, BIPs, FBAs, disciplining students in special education, gifted education, and all other items that may fall under the Director of Educational Services' supervision.
  18. Oversees and supervises the athletic programs and/or extracurricular programs at assigned school.
  19. Collaborates with CSFO on matters related to finance, payroll, bookkeeping, budgets, purchasing, and all other items that may fall under the CSFO's supervision.
  20. Collaborates with the Technology Director on matters related to technology; including purchasing, implementation, training staff, repairs, and all other items that may fall under the Technology Director's supervision.
  21. Collaborates with the Child Nutrition Director on matters related to the nutrition program. Collaborates with CNP Director to oversee, supervise, and evaluate CNP staff that are under the direct supervision of the principal.
  22. Oversees the development of newly assigned staff members and assigns mentors as needed.
  23. Communicates, through staff meetings and written/electronic correspondence, information that will keep staff informed of policies, procedures and instructional program changes and updates.
  24. Participates in school system meetings, state meetings, and other activities that relate to professional development and effective school operations.
  25. Oversees school improvement process and the implementation of school improvement plans, accreditation and accountability reports, and other required plans.
  26. Demonstrates high-expectations for self, for staff, and for students, and creates an environment that has goals that are both rigorous and achievable.
  27. Uses appropriate interview procedures.
  28. Conducts periodic and consistent observations using approved evaluation tools.
  29. Conducts professional meetings with individual teachers to discuss observations, attendance, and evaluations; documents personnel matters according to established school system procedures.
  30. Supervises and maintains the instructional program according to the school system and state guidelines.
  31. Manages and supervises the school's financial resources, including the preparation and disbursement of the school budget and internal accounts.
  32. Establishes and manages attendance procedures at the assigned school.
  33. Maintains property inventory for school property in accordance with system financial procedure.
  34. Provides a quick response to any emergency involving students, staff or the school facility.
  35. Maintains high visibility within all areas of the facility.
  36. Manages and administers personnel development through training, in-service and other developmental activities.
  37. Orients newly assigned staff members and assists in their development.
  38. Models and encourages positive interpersonal communication skills for all non-instructional and instructional personnel.
  39. Develops and maintains positive school/community relations, promotes the school, and acts as liaison between the school and community.
  40. Directs and develops the recruitment of business and/or civic partners to benefit the school and community.
  41. When appropriate, solicits additional resources to support school programs through grant writing, development programs, or fund-raising activities in accordance with school system financial guidelines.
  42. Models and maintains high ethical standards.
  43. Demonstrates initiative in the performance of assigned responsibilities.
  44. Participates successfully in the training programs offered to increase skill and proficiency related to assignment.
  45. Responds to inquiries and requests in a timely and positive manner.
  46. Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local laws.
  47. Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures.
  48. Effectively manages the day-to-day operations of the assigned school.
  49. Coordinates and implements the school safety plan for assigned school.
  50. Meets with various stakeholders to communicate and develop partnerships to benefit the school and community.
  51. Oversees discipline procedures and maintains a safe, orderly learning environment for staff and students.
  52. Develops and implements a master schedule and appropriate bell schedule according to the direction of the Superintendent.
  53. Communicates with the Superintendent, the Superintendent designee, and Directors (as appropriate) of potential problems, unusual events, and opportunities for improvement.
  54. Performs other job-related duties as directed by the Superintendent.

SALARY: Salary and contract to be negotiated with the Superintendent and approved by the Board.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 240 days.


EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated according to board policy.
