Under direction, the 7254 Automotive Machinist Supervisor I supervises a group of skilled automotive and heavy-duty mechanics in connection with major overhaul and reconditioning of all types of automotive, heavy truck and off-road equipment.

1. Plan and coordinate work assignments for group of automotive machinists engaged in disassembling, overhauling, repairing and installing mechanical, electrical and hydraulic assemblies in heavy duty and off-road equipment, using hand, power and machine tools including lathes, grinders, hydraulic and drill presses and welding equipment;

1. Supervise work activities of automotive machinists;

1. Inspects and review work in progress and completed work to ensure conformance to standard procedure and machine shop practices;

1. Inspect shop equipment, machinery and facilities to assure proper maintenance and cleanliness;

1. Prepare drawing and sketches in connection with the fabrication of tools and safety devices for machine shop use;

1. Requisition supplies, parts, and shop equipment, and maintain inventory records to ensure proper quality and quantity;

1. Prepare cost estimates on work orders and repairs;

1. Lead the vehicle and equipment intake process, which includes initiating required documentation, recording vehicle specifications, entering data into tracking systems, and supporting inventory setup for newly received assets;

1. Lead the outfitting process, which includes arranging for installation of specialized vehicles and equipment, and coordinating with external vendors and other Airport departments;

1. Manage the storage and disposal of waste generated by the shop, including hazardous waste such as used oil and gasoline;

1. Train and develop subordinate staff;

1. Perform other duties as listed in the 7254 Automotive Machinist Supervisor I class specification, which can be found on DHR’s website ( .

2. Education: High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D. or High School Proficiency Examination);

AND

1. Experience:

a. A combination of journey-level experience and/or four (4)-year apprenticeship training as an automotive machinist or heavy-duty mechanic totaling eight (8) years, in which the major duties were disassembling, repairing, overhauling and installing mechanical, electrical and hydraulic assemblies in heavy duty and off-road vehicles and power-driven equipment;

AND

b. Two (2) years of this experience must have been in a supervisory capacity;

AND

1. License and Certification:

• Possession of a valid Class C (or III) driver's license; AND

• Eligible to obtain a Class B (or II) driver’s license and Medical Certificate at the time of appointment.

NOTES: In addition to the above Minimum Qualifications, this position at the San Francisco International Airport requires the following:

• The hours for this position are 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM.

• Candidates must be able to obtain a Class A Driver’s License with Medical Certificate within twelve (12) months of the time of appointment. Failure to maintain the required license may be cause for termination.

Nature of Work: involves some physical effort and considerable dexterity in the use of the fingers, limbs and body; continuous exposure to physical and working conditions where minor injuries may occur. May be required to work nights, weekends and/or holidays. Some positions may require possession of a Class A (or I) driver license with Medical Certificate.

One-year full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

Selection Procedures:

After application submission, candidates deemed qualified must complete all subsequent steps to advance in this selection process, which includes the following:

Oral/Performance Examination (Weight: 100%)

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in an Oral/Performance examination designed to determine their relative knowledge, skill, and ability levels in job-related areas. Candidates will be placed on the eligible list in rank order according to their final passing score.

Note: Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed to advance through all the steps in the selection process. Only those applicants meeting the minimum qualifications requirement will be notified of the exact date, time, and place to report for the Oral/Performance Examination.

Knowledge, Skills, and Ability: Principles, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in machine shop work; various metals and their characteristics and methods of cutting and machining them; machine shop safety devices and precautions. Plan, assign and supervise the activities of subordinate craftsmen; maintain shop operating records and prepare related reports; prepare drawings and sketches in connection with machine shop work.

Eligible List/Score Report: 

A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals are resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., because of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission.

Certification:

The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination is Rule of Three (3). The hiring department may administer additional position-specific selection procedures prior to making final hiring decisions.

What else should I know?

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Clearance: Candidates for employment with the San Francisco Airport Commission are required to undergo a criminal history check, including FBI fingerprints, and Security Threat Assessment in order to determine eligibility for security clearance and may be required to undergo drug/alcohol screening. Per Civil Service Commission Rule Section 110.9.1, every applicant for an examination must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for the examination. Failure to obtain and maintain security clearance may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission.

Customs Clearance: This position requires that the incumbent be qualified for unescorted access to the San Francisco International Airport U.S. Customs Security Area. An application for a U.S. Custom Access Seal may be submitted to Customs ONLY after employment has commenced. Employment in this position requires that the incumbent submit an application for, successfully acquire and maintain a Customs Access Seal. Per Civil Service Commission Rule 110.9.1, every applicant must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for this examination. Failure to acquire or maintain customs access, a requirement for this position, may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission. Customs Access Seal requirements and procedures are located in the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 19, Part 122, Sections 181 or 189.
