Credentialed School Nurse / Registered Nurse

As a Credentialed School Nurse (CSN) and Registered Nurse, you will serve as a vital clinical leader within the school community, promoting disease prevention, health education, and holistic well-being across a diverse student population (Preschool 12th grade). This role bridges healthcare and education, ensuring that students' medical needs are managed with the highest standard of clinical excellence to support their academic success.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Direct Clinical Care & Specialized Procedures
• Deliver comprehensive, high-quality nursing care ranging from standard first aid and triage to emergency medical response.
• Perform and oversee specialized health procedures and the maintenance of medical equipment, including gastric tubes, catheters, tracheostomies, and ventilators.
• Administer and monitor specialized respiratory treatments and other complex clinical interventions as prescribed.
• Case Management & Care Plan Development
• Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) tailored to students with chronic conditions such as diabetes, asthma, epilepsy, and severe food allergies.
• Collaborate actively with multidisciplinary teams to ensure health accommodations align seamlessly with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and 504 plans.
• Serve as a primary liaison between families, medical providers, school staff, and administrators to advocate for student health needs.
• Medication Administration & Compliance
• Oversee the safe, accurate, and timely administration of both routine and emergency medications on campus.
• Manage and secure the proper storage, tracking, and auditing of all pharmaceuticals at the school site.
• Ensure strict regulatory compliance by obtaining and maintaining updated physician orders, parent authorizations, and required legal documentation.
• Health Records Management & Compliance Mandates
• Direct the maintenance of accurate, confidential, and up-to-date student health histories and cumulative electronic medical records.
• Audit and maintain state-mandated student immunization records, identifying deficiencies and coordinating with families to achieve compliance.
• Ensure all clinical documentation and communication adhere strictly to HIPAA, FERPA, and district privacy standards.
• Public Health & Disease Prevention
• Promote a healthy school environment by monitoring, reporting, and managing communicable disease outbreaks in accordance with public health guidelines.
• Provide health education, resources, and preventative counseling to students, families, and staff to foster safe and supportive learning environments.

Requirements

• Must be able to occasionally lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds.
• Must be able to provide life-saving interventions if needed. This includes the ability to perform at least 5 sets of hands only CPR for roughly 2 minutes.
• Must be able to assume and maintain a variety of postures (kneeling, squatting, crawling, sitting, standing) for extended periods of time.
• Must be able to sit on the floor, stand, or walk for extended periods of time which normally will be the length of the school day and include the physical demands of assisting a student or students in and outside of a classroom space.
• Must be willing and able to restrain/hold/transport and utilize quick body movements as indicated in the Behavior Intervention Plan while working with children with challenging behavior.
• Must have manual dexterity to perform specific computer and electronic device functions for data collection.
• Must be able to receive and communicate detailed information through oral communication.
• Must have visual acuity to read and comprehend written communication through computer, electronic devices, and paper means.
• Must have reliable transportation and be willing and able to travel between different job sites based on job assignment.
• Must be flexible and willing to work in a variety of schools and settings.
• Must have the ability to be understanding, patient, friendly, and show a receptive attitude toward children with special needs and must demonstrate the ability to remain calm under stressful conditions.
• Must have basic job related math skills, to include but is not limited to independent proficiency in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
• Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English at a level required for successful job performance.
• Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
• Ability to write simple correspondence.
• Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to employees of the school district.
• Ability to meet and interact with teachers and students with tact, courtesy, and discretion.

Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited nursing program.
• Experience: 1-3 years' experience as an RN in a school setting preferred.
• Licensure and Certifications: Current Registered Nurse Licensure within the state of practice; Preliminary or Clear Credential in the field of School Nursing for California and Illinois applicants (dependent on case requirements); Nationally Certified School Nurse (CSN) through the National Board for Certification of School Nurses (NBCSN) for applicants outside of California and Illinois (dependent on case requirements); Current BLS certification through American Heart Association.
