Job Description

The Lead Pharmacy Technician oversees daily operations across assigned pharmacy work areas, guiding a team of technicians to deliver accurate, efficient, and patient-focused prescription services. This role balances hands-on technician duties with leadership responsibilities, ensuring smooth workflow, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement within a fast-paced, high-volume pharmacy environment.

Responsibilities

• Lead the daily activities of pharmacy technicians across assigned work areas to ensure efficient and accurate prescription processing.

• Assign resources and staffing based on prescription volume, workload, operational priorities, and service level expectations.

• Conduct shift huddles to communicate goals, priorities, staffing plans, quality expectations, and safety updates.

• Monitor workflow throughout the shift and adjust staffing assignments to maintain productivity and meet turnaround commitments.

• Provide coaching, training, and real-time support to pharmacy technicians to resolve operational and workflow-related issues.

• Serve as the primary escalation point for operational and workflow concerns, coordinating with pharmacy leadership as needed.

• Escalate clinical, quality, compliance, safety, and staffing issues to pharmacy leadership in a timely and appropriate manner.

• Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, professionalism, and patient-focused service within the technician team.

• Support prescription intake, data entry, order processing, refill management, and prescription preparation within the technician scope of practice.

• Prioritize urgent and time-sensitive prescriptions to ensure timely turnaround and adherence to service standards.

• Review work queues and coordinate prescription flow through verification, fulfillment, and shipping processes.

• Collaborate with pharmacists, customer service teams, and fulfillment personnel to identify and resolve workflow issues.

• Perform technician duties as needed to support production requirements and meet service commitments.

• Ensure compliance with federal and state pharmacy regulations, HIPAA requirements, company policies, and standard operating procedures.

• Reinforce documentation accuracy, patient confidentiality, and adherence to quality standards across all technician activities.

• Monitor technician work for completeness, accuracy, and regulatory compliance, providing feedback and corrective guidance.

• Escalate quality events, dispensing concerns, medication errors, product complaints, and compliance issues to appropriate stakeholders.

• Support investigations, corrective actions, audits, inspections, and continuous improvement initiatives related to pharmacy operations.

• Train and onboard new pharmacy technicians on systems, workflows, equipment, documentation practices, and department procedures.

• Provide ongoing coaching and performance feedback to support technician growth and performance.

• Identify skill gaps within the team and support development plans to enhance technician capabilities.

• Assist with competency assessments and employee evaluations to ensure technicians meet performance and regulatory standards.

• Cross-train team members across different work areas to improve operational flexibility and coverage.

• Monitor inventory levels of medications, supplies, packaging materials, and production-related resources to prevent shortages.

• Coordinate with inventory and purchasing teams to maintain adequate stock and avoid operational disruptions.

• Support inventory counts, reconciliations, expiration tracking, and controlled substance inventory processes.

• Ensure proper storage and handling of refrigerated, hazardous, controlled, and temperature-sensitive products.

• Identify workflow inefficiencies, bottlenecks, and process improvement opportunities within pharmacy operations.

• Recommend and help implement operational improvements that enhance quality, efficiency, and service levels.

• Support the implementation of new systems, procedures, products, and operational initiatives.

• Track and communicate key operational metrics and performance indicators to stakeholders.

Essential Skills

• High school diploma or GED.

• Active pharmacy technician registration or licensure in the state of employment.

• National pharmacy technician certification through PTCB or ExCPT/NHA, as required or preferred based on state regulations.

• Minimum of 3 years of pharmacy technician experience.

• Experience in high-volume retail, specialty, mail-order, hospital, compounding, or fulfillment pharmacy environments.

• Demonstrated leadership, training, coaching, or team coordination experience in a pharmacy or healthcare setting.

• Strong understanding of pharmacy operations, prescription processing, medication safety, and regulatory requirements.

• Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail.

• Ability to prioritize multiple tasks effectively in a fast-paced environment.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills.

• Proficiency with pharmacy management systems.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• 5 or more years of pharmacy technician experience.

• Previous experience as a Lead Pharmacy Technician, Pharmacy Technician, or Pharmacy Operations Lead.

• Specialty, mail-order, compounding, or fulfillment pharmacy experience.

• Sterile and/or non-sterile compounding experience.

• Experience supporting pharmacy audits, inspections, and quality management programs.

• Knowledge of USP <795> , USP <797> , and USP <800> standards.

• Experience with continuous improvement, Lean methodologies, or process optimization.

• Experience working in a high-growth pharmacy or healthcare operations environment.

Work Environment

This role operates in a fast-paced, high-volume pharmacy setting with a strong focus on accuracy, patient safety, and operational efficiency. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m., supporting evening operations and production needs. Team members work with pharmacy management systems, prescription processing technologies, and standard office software, while handling medications, packaging materials, and temperature-sensitive products in accordance with regulatory and safety standards. The environment emphasizes collaboration, continuous improvement, and adherence to established workflows and procedures.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Fairfield, OH.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $27.00 - $32.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
