We combine project-based learning, an advanced curriculum, and supplementary tutorial support to maximize student agency. The Great Oaks Charter School - New York City (GO-NYC) opened in the Fall of 2013 on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. The school currently serves approximately 310 students in 6th-11th grades. At scale, Great Oaks - NYC will serve students in grades 6th-12th. GO-NYC recently opened its doors in its new location at 240 Bleecker Street in the West Village. At GO-NYC, we utilize a full inclusion model which means that every core class is taught as an Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) classroom. Our classrooms will typically have two co-teachers (one content, one special education) as well as an Americorps Fellow working with students every day.

We believe in the power of deeper learning and know that learning is more than preparing students to be successful on a high-stakes standardized test so we give them multiple and diverse opportunities to develop significant knowledge and skills, use their knowledge to produce something original, and connect their learning in every lesson to who they are and who they want to become. We work to understand the grade-level challenges and triumphs and use it to measure and reflect on what students know and are able to do. We believe that mistakes lead to growth and know that our students' success and growth is a reflection of our efficacy as teachers and leaders; so we carefully consider data daily to improve and innovate.

We create a safe learning environment and a sense of belonging where students explore their passion, purpose and knowledge of self. We connect with our student's families and partner with them to increase investment and connection. We prioritize socio-emotional learning and trauma-informed practices so that our students feel known, loved and valued. We support our students both inside of the classroom and out.

POSITION SUMMARY

GO-NYC High School is seeking a dynamic, creative, mission-aligned urban educator to join our team as a High School ELA Teacher.

Teachers at GO-NYC High School are responsible for preparing each of our students for college & career success through rigorous instruction and maintaining consistently high expectations for conduct. Teachers are models of the hard work, desire for learning, and character that we expect of our students.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The High School ELA Teacher is responsible for executing the following tasks, including but not limited to:

• Demonstrating solid knowledge and understanding of the content matter.
• Establishing, communicating, and demanding high expectations for student learning, and quality of work.
• Using a multitude of instructional strategies and activities that are academically rigorous and highly engaging.
• Executing detailed lesson plans mapped to a year-long academic plan to address learning needs.
• Taking full responsibility for student failure and constantly working to respond to the students' learning needs.
• Consistently sending the message that this work is important, that the student can do it, and that you will not give up on a student

• Track and analyze student data to identify student learning needs and set ambitious, attainable goals for student progress.
• Planning and implementing strategies to achieve targets related to student learning outcomes.
• Working collaboratively with the principal and other teachers to develop and revise curriculum based on assessment data.

• Maintaining an efficient, respectful, and positive tone in your classroom.
• Utilizing time to maximize student learning and communicating a constant, tangible sense of urgency.
• Ensuring that all students are on task at all times during a lesson.
• Clearly enforcing and emphasizing school rules, values, and expectations.
• Building relationships with students that demonstrate an open concern and a sense of responsibility for students' academic and personal growth.
• Supervising students during lunch and transition periods.

• Putting in an extraordinary amount of time and effort to contribute to student and school success.
• Independently assuming additional responsibilities when necessary and demonstrating leadership.
• Making frequent phone calls, keeping parents informed of successes and struggles.
• Maintaining an orderly school culture.
• Occasionally leading professional development sessions.
• Other duties that may be necessary to fulfill the mission of the school.

QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will have proven success in implementing high-quality instruction that leads to the improvement of student achievement in an urban school. S/he/they will possess exceptional relationship-building skills and the ability to communicate clearly to multiple stakeholders. The successful candidate will also have:

• A strong academic record with a Bachelor's degree from a competitive college or university required; advanced degree in subject area preferred
• Knowledge of high school ELA content
• State teaching certification (strongly preferred)
• Extremely strong classroom management abilities
• A strong belief that all students can succeed
• A do-whatever-it-takes attitude including a willingness to work occasionally on the weekend or in the evening
• An exceptional ability to respond well to feedback and implement it immediately

COMPENSATION

Great Oaks provides a competitive compensation and benefits package; exact compensation will vary based on experience, certification, and education. The anticipated salary range is between $63,000 - $95,000.

GENERAL INFORMATION

All staff are required to pass a background check through fingerprinting and receive security clearance to work at Great Oaks NYC. Must also have proof of U.S citizenship or legal resident status. This position is for the 2026-2027 school year.
