The Nurse Manager (NM) is responsible for the management of nursing practice and operations on a designated unit/service setting such as inpatient, procedural, emergency department or ambulatory care. This includes, but is not limited to, the management of: clinical nursing practice, staff recruitment, retention, labor relations, supply chain and budget, daily staffing (as supported by the Center-Led Staffing Model), employee performance evaluation, quality improvement, staff education, medical record documentation, compliance with internal and external regulatory agency requirements and patient safety solution/corrective action plans.
The Nurse Manager collaborates with multiple professionals to support and coordinate the provision / management of patient care inclusive of the patient admission throughout the discharge process appropriate to the setting. This individual works closely with the Nursing Director, unit Dyad partner and staff to ensure that the Service/Unit setting maintains the highest standards of patient care and is responsive to the needs of the patient & family as well as the organization.
ResponsibilitiesPATIENT CARE
1. Leads nursing practice using the tenets of the Professional Practice Model of Relationship Centered Care and the Care Delivery Model of Modified Primary Nursing for the promotion of patient experience.
2. Demonstrates proficiency in all aspects of Hourly Care Checks and role models expected behaviors.
3. Ensures the integration of Hourly Care Checks into clinical activities to enhance Relationship Centered Care validates staff members Hourly Care Checks on all patients by direct observation and patient feedback.
4. Assesses staff competency in Hourly Care Checks and provides consistent meaningful feedback with more focused feedback as needed.
5. Conducts rounding of identified patients on a daily basis (Monday-Friday.). Conducts rounding on staff on a weekly basis.
6. Communicates quantitative and qualitative information regarding the patient experience and staff engagement to the staff and the Interdisciplinary Patient Care Team that leads to the development and implementation of an action plan.
7. Collaborates with the physician dyad and escalates concerns as appropriate.
8. Follows up on all patient concerns in a timely manner and provides service recovery as needed.
9. Demonstrates caring, agility, respect, compassion, empathy and active listening through dialogue, body language and actions.
PATIENT EXPERIENCE
1. Role models the tenets of Mount Sinai Relationship Centered Care (MSHRCC) by collaboratively facilitating patient-centered care processes appropriate to the clinical setting (inpatient, procedural, ambulatory) through facilitation of the following actions but not limited to: Admission or Visit Welcome, , Bedside Shift Report, HELP, AM/PM Care, Dedicated Sit Down, Purposeful Hourly Rounding (PHR)/Care Checks, or patient check-ins, Medication Review, Discharge Wrap Up or visit completion.
2. Participates and facilitates Communication Huddle with staff at the start of the shift, identifying high-risk patients who require special attention and escalates concerns in a timely manner for resolution.
3. Participates in Interdisciplinary Care Rounds, or other structured team communications as appropriate to the care setting, leading nursing practice while supporting the interdisciplinary teams use of evidence-based practice for care delivery, LOS reductions, transition of care and discharge planning, transition planning, and efficient access to care..
4. Collaborates with physicians, nursing, case management, OT/PT, pharmacy, and ancillary services to identify and address patient care outcomes and barriers to safe, timely discharge.
5. Communicates to nursing leadership concerns or issues identified during huddle and throughout shift.
6. Initiates service recovery for patients and family members who have concerns and escalates to Nursing Director/designee and Patient Relations as needed.
7. Interprets and communicates patient experience scores and benchmarks and keeps staff informed of progress and areas of opportunity.
8. Considers the patient’s values, preferences, cultural diversity, expressed needs and knowledge in all aspects of care.
9. Empowers staff to use evidence-based practices to increase understanding of patients’ perceptions of care.
10. Identifies the Key Performance Indicator(s) of Patient Experience and oversees progress through the use of the Story Board performance improvement process within the Data Management Board (DMB).
11. Demonstrates caring, respect, compassion, empathy and active listening through verbal and body language and actions.
QUALITY AND SAFETY
1. Plan, supports, and leads a safe, therapeutic, efficient, and patient-centered care environment that promotes professional nursing practice across inpatient, ambulatory, and procedural settings.
2. Identifies and investigates issues or variances in practice/operations by participating in the RCA/Patient Safety Solutions (PSS) processes and implements corrective action plans/safety solutions accordingly.
3. Partners with clinical and operational leaders to monitor quality, safety, and throughput metrics, using data to drive continuous improvement in length of stay and discharge processes.
4. Participates in unit and hospital-based quality, patient safety and patient experience process improvement initiatives.
5. Utilizes the principles of Lean methodology for process improvement through the use of the Daily Management Boards (DMB).
6. Identifies the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) for Quality and Safety with emphasis of the nurse sensitive indicators using the Story Board process within the DMB, utilizing Leader Standard Work appropriate to the practice setting..
7. Fosters a fair and open Just Culture that encourages error and near-miss occurrence reporting.
8. Leads interdisciplinary quality improvement teams using the principles of high reliability.
9. Reviews unit progress, changes, and compliance with quality and safety metrics with clinical nurses and other members of the healthcare team.
10. Responds to escalations of potential safety hazards or gaps from best practice by correcting concerns following institutional chain of command protocol.
11. Monitors institutional information technology infrastructure and corrects gaps in clinical nursing documentation.
12. Leads staff participation in quality and safety initiatives and mandated compliance measures.
13. Demonstrates accountability for all unit quality and safety practices and compliance and ensures required evaluation of staff competencies is maintained.
OPERATIONS AND ADMINISTRATION
1. Supports the implementation of the mission, vision, goals, and objectives of the department across inpatient, ambulatory, and procedural care settings, ensuring alignment throughout the clinical service and patient care areas.
2. Provides administrative and clinical oversight to ensure that all operational activities—including staffing, patient access and flow, support services, interdisciplinary collaboration, resource utilization, and financial stewardship—support organizational goals and high-quality patient care across all care settings.
3. Ensures compliance with all applicable staffing regulations, collective bargaining agreements, and regulatory requirements, including the staffing enforcement provisions of the applicable CBA, NYSDOH Staffing Committee Law, and inpatient, procedural and ambulatory staffing standards, as applicable.
4. Oversees patient care delivery and daily operations across assigned inpatient units and/or ambulatory practice areas, utilizing Leader Standard Work to ensure consistency in leadership practices, operational excellence, patient access, quality outcomes, and the implementation of evidence-based best practices.
5. Works collaboratively with the Center-led Staffing Department as needed to ensure staffing grids are met (as covered by this service) and optimize workforce deployment.
6. Support labor management strategies by collaboratively maximizing retention strategies and internal resource utilization and minimizing reliance on premium labor, verifying that staffing plans maintain quality, safety, and appropriate clinical expertise.
7. Monitors staffing trends and workforce metrics, validating and implementing data-driven recommendations to support informed staffing decisions and continuous workforce improvement.
8. Works collaboratively with physician dyads and all members of the healthcare team to promote patient care and regulatory standards.
9. Prioritizes recruitment and retention strategies in accordance with system and local hospital retention goals.
10. Implements and monitors unit salary and supply budgets, including capital equipment allocation according to MSHS financial goals.
11. Monitors availability and maintenance of nursing equipment and supplies
12. Maintains position control of established positions and manages the recruitment and retention of qualified staff.
13. Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information.
14. Evaluates nursing staff performance and mentors, coaches, counsels and disciplines staff as needed.
15. Evaluates all newly hired/transferred staff and participates in the decision about passing the probationary period.
16. Participates in the ongoing and completes the annual performance appraisals for all staff.
17. Completes performance improvement plans of employees as needed and shares feedback with the Associate Directors/Directors and Senior Directors accordingly.
18. Interprets and implements the associated collective bargaining agreements and System and Hospital policies and procedures.
19. Performs disciplinary actions as necessary with collaboration with Nursing and Labor Relations.
20. Acts as a management witness in disciplinary activities.
21. Ensures all staff have met their orientation goals/weekly progress reports and annual competency requirements and participates in the Competency Planning Tool for unit/service.
22. Conducts regular staff meetings to ensure communication with staff about progress, changes and compliance with all hospital policies and procedures. Maintains records of minutes for staff team meetings.
23. Encourages, recognizes and rewards staff participation in quality and safety initiatives, compliance and successes.
24. Facilitates organizational change initiatives by using effective strategies.
25. Leads a shared decision-making model by establishing a structure of shared governance, just culture and staff engagement in structured unit, procedural or practice, practice councils, departmental meetings and initiatives.
26. Responds to protest of assignment in a timely manner as detailed in the collective bargaining agreement and discusses the resolution in unit staff meetings.
27. Ensures assigned inpatient units, ambulatory practices, and clinical departments maintain compliance with all applicable regulatory, accreditation, and professional practice standards, including those established by the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH), The Joint Commission, and other governing agencies, as applicable.

- Bachelor of Science with a major in nursing required, Masters in nursing or health related field preferred.
- 3-5 years of nursing clinical care with Charge Nurse/Supervisory experience preferred. Must have relevant clinical competence in area of nursing practice assigned.
- Licensed as a registered nurse with current registration in New York State
- Board certification in clinical specialty or leadership preferred.
- Required Certifications: BLS via American Heart Association
