Registered Nurse

The Registered Nurse applies knowledge of nursing theory, technical, and communication skills in delivering high-quality compassionate care to patients and families. The Registered Professional Nurse assesses patient needs and develops a plan of care in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team. Provides direct care, evaluates patient progress, and coordinates care delivery throughout the patient's episode. The RN develops specialized skills in the area of patients admitted for medical conditions. He/She provides care to adult, adolescent, and geriatric populations with medical conditions. The Registered Nurse is accountable for patient and family education, assisting in understanding self-care beyond hospitalization. This includes lifestyle changes to support health and healing. The Registered Nurse is expected to promote comfort and provide emotional support in a healing environment. Applies nursing knowledge and skill in the delivery of care. Assesses patient and family needs through active listening and analyzing data or information obtained through direct observation and assessment. Creates a developmentally and age-appropriate, culturally relevant, individualized plan of care to address the identified health problems. In collaboration with the patient, family, and healthcare team members, sets goals and monitors the patient's progress. The RN adjusts the plan based on patient response, change in condition, or reprioritization of needs. Promotes, advocates for, and protects the health, safety, and rights of the patient. Encourages and builds mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members to accomplish the best possible patient outcomes. Teaches others as appropriate and delegates tasks consistent with individual education, training, and scope of practice. Understands personal responsibility to safeguard public safety through compliance with infection prevention strategies. Motivates the patient and family by teaching them necessary information to continue care and healing at home. Assesses patient and family learning styles and structures sessions to maximize understanding. Seeks teachable moments during the care delivery process to emphasize pertinent information. Asks questions to evaluate retention of key points in the self-care process. Documents the education provided and the patient and family response to that education. Systematically evaluates the quality and effectiveness of Nursing Practice and uses results to initiate changes in care delivery. Engages in self-evaluation of practice, identifying strengths and areas for professional development. Takes accountability to increase knowledge and enhance skills. Uses logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions or approaches to problems. Nursing practice reflects the importance of making a meaningful connection with patients and families. Seeks to develop a helping, trusting, and caring relationship by being present in the moment of interaction and communicating effectively. Strives to understand what is most important to the patient and family, acknowledging they are the central focus of all care and services. Embraces the importance of creating a healing environment as a key element of professional nursing practice. Demonstrates skill in the application of interventions, including medication administration. Occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens is reasonably anticipated. Required tasks involve potential contact with blood, body fluids, and tissues.
