Legal Counsel

This position is responsible for supporting the legal and business affairs of USA Swimming and assisting the Chief Legal & Development Officer and Associate General Counsel in advising the multi-faceted departments of USA Swimming.

Contract Management:

• Collaborate with staff to draft and review contracts, waivers, releases, and contest rules.
• Advise staff on contract status, risks, and potential liabilities associated with certain transactions.

Litigation & Case Management:

• Assist in National Board of Review (NBOR) operations, including denials of membership due to violations of the USA Swimming Background Check Policy and the Code of Conduct.
• Assist in managing litigation and subpoenas, including responding to routine civil discovery requests.
• Support the Associate General Counsel with Ethics Committee inquiries and investigations.

Other Duties:

• Provide counsel regarding intellectual property, data privacy, and employment.
• Support the Business Affairs Division with special projects.
• Other duties, as assigned.

• Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of contacts, including outside counsel, executive and senior management, and business associates.

• Sound and practical business judgement.
• Readily establishes credibility and maintains elevated levels of confidentiality at all times.

Education & Experience:

• Bachelor’s Degree and Juris Doctor from an accredited Law School.
• Licensed to practice or advise on legal matters in the United States.
• Minimum four years of legal experience, ideally including time at a law firm.
• Member in good standing of a State Bar Association.

Physical Requirements:

• Must be able to travel, both domestically and internationally, up to 5% of the year.
• Must be able to lift at least ten pounds.
• This position works in an office setting in the USA Swimming headquarters office in Colorado Springs, CO; must be willing to relocate to Colorado Springs, CO, or the surrounding area.

Salary & Benefits:

• Salary range for this position is $120,000 - $140,000 annually.
• Bonus Eligibility: Based on company performance, this position may be eligible for an annual target bonus of 10%.
