Parent Educator

The Parent Educator provides appropriate services to families with children ages 3-5 in an effort to cultivate home-to-school relationships and increase potential for long-term academic success of students. The Parent Educator will act as a liaison between the school district and families, providing outreach and coordinating support services. The Parent Educator will coordinate and implement family education and school improvement activities for all students.

Salary & Benefits: Hourly wage is $26.20 per hour Benefits include health, life, and vision insurance; Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF) contribution; Paid sick time and personal time.

Type of Employment: Full-time

Terms of Employment: Hours per day: 8 hours with ½ hour non-paid lunch 9 month employment; 180 days

Terms of Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board of Education's policy

Education, Experience & Certification Requirements

• Be at least 21 years of age
• B.A./B.S. college degree.
• Background in social work, education, child development or related field.
• Highly interested in early childhood children and families.

Duties & Essential Job Functions

The essential job responsibilities for this position of Parent Educator for Jacksonville School District #117 are listed below.

• Provide outreach to parents of young children providing information about the Early Childhood Program.
• Promote community awareness of the Early Childhood program through planning on-site and community site screenings, preparing and distributing brochures and information to local community agencies.
• Contact parents to schedule and confirm screening appointments, arrange transportation if needed.
• Maintain screening folders, the waiting list and all paperwork required.
• Complete the parent interview component of screening, work with the screening team to determine student eligibility and discuss the results of the screening and enrollment eligibility with parents.
• Assist parents with completing school paperwork, if needed.
• Communicate with teachers and office staff regarding family compliance with school district state guidelines for physicals, immunizations, enrollment forms and attendance, follow-up as needed.
• Coordinate with community agencies and follow up with student services such as vision, hearing and dental screenings; food bank and picture days.
• Collaborate with local agencies and assist families with community resources such as childcare, health, food, clothing, and housing needs.
• Maintain records of family contacts, parent attendance of family events, education programs, and volunteerism.
• Supervise arrival/departure, bus loading/unloading and parent/student drop off.
• Supervise children during bus returns, communicate with families, and coordinate with community services for support as needed.
• Coordinate, assist, and participate with special events such as family night, open houses, field trips, on-site and classroom activities, etc.
• Participate in building committees such as Intervention team and Parent Advisory group.
• Coordinate with the Kindergarten transition team to assist in students' transitions to Kindergarten.
• In special or unexpected situations, assist or fill-in for classroom or office staff as needed.
• Assist classroom teachers with education and assessment of small groups of children as needed.
• Attend school family events and after-hours meetings such as the parent advisory group, parent teacher conferences, and screening events.
• Accompany classroom staff on home visits.
• Conduct parent education classes on the importance of early education.
• Provide in-services training with parents/demonstrate how to assist their child with literacy and educational activities at home.
• Carry out any other duties as assigned by the building and/or district administration.
