Mile High Youth Corps (MHYC) is a nonprofit organization that helps young adults build skills, education, and career pathways through meaningful service opportunities. MHYC Corpsmembers support communities across Colorado through programs focused on construction, conservation, and workforce development. The Sustainable Trades Pathways (STP) program at MHYC is a 20-week pre-apprenticeship opportunity designed to prepare young adults for careers in sustainable trades.
The STP Crew Leader will serve as a peer leader and mentor while participating fully in STP training, certifications, and service projects. The crew leader helps facilitate service-learning activities, supports team development and accountability, and serves alongside staff to create a positive and successful experience for Corpsmembers. The STP Crew Leader will serve Metro Denver residents through hands-on projects, including installing efficiency upgrades in homes using MHYC vehicles and materials. Daily tasks for the Crew Leader can include: organizing fleet operations, facilitating reflection and service-learning activities, assisting with service data collection, and collaborating with program staff to contribute to positive outcomes for all STP Corpsmembers. Crew Leaders will participate in classroom, online, and hands-on training connected to career pathways in sustainable trades. This is an AmeriCorps funded position.

- Service location : 1801 Federal Blvd. Denver, CO 80204 and travel to service sites as needed using MHYC vehicles.

- Timeline: This is a temporary, 20-week (675-hour term), position. June 24– November 10, 2026.
- Bi-weekly Schedule: Monday – Friday 8:30a-4:00p; Some Fridays off (approx. 72 hours over two-weeks). Service schedules are subject to change based on project needs, training activities, holidays, weather, and AmeriCorps requirements.
- Occasional evening and weekend service may be required with advance notice.
Compensation and Benefits
- Biweekly stipend: Earn a living stipend of $1,360 (pre-tax) every two weeks.
- Education Award: Earn a scholarship of up to $2,817.14 (675-hour term). This education award can be used to pay future tuition, training costs, and payback for qualifying student loans. Individuals have 7 years to use the education award.
- Industry Recognized Certifications: OSHA 10, First Aid/CPR, Building Science Principles, and/or other individualized certificates. Build your resume and experience for a future in green industries and pipeline into registered apprenticeships!
- Training: Hands-on, classroom, and online training in residential retrofitting and conservation, sustainable trades pathways, customer service, career readiness, data tracking and reporting, and community engagement, with opportunities to earn industry-recognized certifications and credentials. Additional training and ongoing education in leadership development, climate action, environmental justice, financial wellness, teamwork, and professional development. Roughly half your service term will be training hours.
- Supportive Services: MHYC provides resources for mental health counseling, transportation costs, food security, and other personal needs. Corpsmembers receive 4 free mental health counseling sessions per term.
- Student Loan Forbearance: Corpsmembers can apply to put their qualified federal student loans on hold during their term through the National Service Trust.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Service Delivery
- Facilitate daily safety circles, goal setting activities, and project debrief.
- Support Corpsmembers in service planning and operations: material organization and maintenance, vehicle management, quality assurance, and data entry.
- Serve as a point of support for technical issues: troubleshoot production issues in the field, communicate effectively with the STP Field Coordinator for customer service claims.
- Assist with on-site coordination of multi-family projects: support project workflow, coordinate data collection, communication of team needs, on-site problem identification and resoultions.
- Support warranty service alongside the Field Coordinator.
- Install in-home energy and water saving measures (low-flow toilets, kitchen aerators, bathroom aerators, programmable thermostats, and LED lightbulbs) and educate the community about the importance of energy and water conservation.
General Operations:
- Promotes a positive environment and helps boost morale. Provides consistent, ongoing feedback to all Corpsmembers. Implements Corpsmembers’ feedback on production and program.
- Participates in overall program planning and operation, provides on-going suggestions for improvement and design.
- Serve as a peer leader and mentor by providing on-site support, facilitating team development, and fostering accountability and professional growth among all Corpsmembers during primary and secondary service projects.
- Support STP staff with program documentation, data collection, outcome tracking, and community outreach efforts.
Qualifications:
- English proficiency. Bi-lingual and Spanish-speaking applicants are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Capable of participating in physical labor including but not limited to: ability to lift 50 lbs., able to conduct repetitive hand and arm motions, and able to maneuver in tight spaces, including bending and kneeling. - Demonstrate commitment to serving with your team, communication and problem solving.
- Preferred: one term of previous service as a Corpsmember with MHYC.
Requirements:
- Must be between the ages of 21-24.
- Must have a high school diploma or GED OR agree to obtain a high school diploma or GED before utilizing the education award
- Must be eligible for enrollment in AmeriCorps as a US Citizen, National, or Lawful Permanent Resident. Documentation will be required on the first day. Must bring identification documents necessary to complete the I-9 and other forms on your first day.
- This program requires Crew Leaders to be program drivers. Driver eligibility requirements: minimum 21 years old, valid driver’s license, and insurable DMV record.
- Pre-service National Service Criminal History Check required (NSOPW, State, and FBI).
- Must not engage in any prohibited activities listed in the AmeriCorps member service agreement and must adhere to rules and regulations specified in the MHYC handbook.
