The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), Central Region Construction & CIP Support, is looking for an Engineering Assistant 2 (Central Region Materials Rover) to help us Keep Alaska Moving! What you will be doing:
This Engineering Assistant 2 position works as a Quality Assurance Materials Rover, helping make sure construction materials used on transportation projects meet required standards through on-site sampling, testing, and field checks. The role includes creating material summaries, reviewing project records, preparing certifications, and noting any issues that need correction. Rovers use a broad understanding of required testing standards to support project teams, answer materials questions, and provide training both in classrooms and out in the field. They also work with consultants and the Regional Materials Lab to confirm material sources meet requirements, identify problems early, and help resolve any failing test results. As department specialists, Rovers coordinate with contractors and consultants to support consistent, statewide materials quality. Our organization, mission, and culture:

Construction provides a direct hands-on experience with construction and engineering practices. The position provides for professional advancement within the Department, health benefits such as medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, and a competitive salary. This position is permanently stationed in Anchorage and will include frequent travel during summer construction, including flights to rural villages. The work will include material sampling and testing on projects site, design plan reviews, materials closeout reviews and assisting with training. The successful incumbent will be interacting with project staff, project managers, as well as other working groups both inside and outside of the Department of Transportation. Who we are looking for:
To be successful in this position, the selected applicant will possess the following core competencies:
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree, or the equivalent with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET.
AND
One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere. Or:
A bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution not accredited by ABET.
AND
An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.
AND
One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere. Or:
Five years of progressively responsible subprofessional engineering experience of which two years was as a Journey level Engineering Technician or Drafting Technician 3 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere. Substitution:
Graduate study in engineering and/or architecture may be substituted for the required experience as an Engineering Assistant 1. (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month of experience). Special Note:
