The Bus Drivers primary responsibility is for the safety of the children on the bus.Essential Functions:Maintains a current Virginia or North Carolina Commercial Driver's License, with Passenger or School Bus Endorsement and Medical Examination CertificateCompletes all pre-employment trainings before first day on floor. These include: Onboarding, Child Abuse Prevention training, Child Development training, licensing training, and behavior management trainingInsures the safety of all passengers while entering and exiting the bus and while crossing driveways or parking lotsDrives safely and observe all traffic rules, signs and courtesiesEnsures passenger attendance is taken during the loading and unloading processCompletes log sheets and safety checklists daily, i.e. Penske pre-trip inspections, mileage logs for each transportCleans vehicle after each use – pick up trash, papers, sweep, etc.Locks all doors and windows after each useReports all repairs and/or needed maintenance to the supervisorConducts a visual sweep of the bus before and after each transport; walks to the end of the bus and checks that all passengers have exited the vehicleDisengages the bus alarm at the end of the transport, which sounds when the bus engine is turned offReports any moving violations you receive to your supervisor; including violations received while operating a YMCA bus and/or violations you may receive on your personal timeIn the event of an accident, notifies the supervisor immediately and contacts local authorities to obtain an accident report; does not leave the scene without an exchange of informationUpholds the association's child protection policies, child abuse and neglect guidelines, and proper reporting procedures at all timesUses positive guidance techniques on the bus; understands that if behavior becomes negative the best way to handle it is by pulling the bus over to the side of the road and then taking care of the behaviorMaintains ongoing communication with supervisorDemonstrates appropriate decision-making abilitiesDemonstrates a working knowledge of YMCA mission, values, purpose, and goals; performs all other duties as assigned by the supervisorAdheres to all Virginia Department of Social Services Division of Licensing standards; familiarizes self with all evacuation and emergency procedures for the busFollows the Code of Conduct established by the YMCA of South Hampton RoadsAttends mandatory staff meetings and trainings to meet Social Service requirement of 16 hours per yearQualifications:Minimum 21 years or olderCPR/First Aid certification (or ability to certify within 60 days of employment)Clear OneSource Criminal Record, CRC, and C.P.S. check. Negative TB testMust possess a current Virginia or North Carolina Commercial Driver's license with a Passenger or School Bus EndorsementCurrent Medical Examination CertificateMust meet the YMCAs insurance carrier's eligibility requirementsMust have a driving record transcript on file at the Corporate Office and approved by the YMCAs Corporate Office Risk ManagerAble to communicate and work effectively with groups of childrenWorking Conditions and Physical Requirements:This position operates primarily in YMCA vehicles and community-based environments and involves regular interaction with children, families, team members, and other stakeholders. Work includes driving in varying traffic, road, and weather conditions and may require flexible or split schedules, including early mornings, afternoons, evenings, or other hours based on transportation and program needs.The employee must maintain the physical and mental readiness necessary to safely operate an assigned vehicle, supervise and assist passengers as appropriate, and respond effectively to traffic conditions, participant needs, and emergencies. The role requires prolonged periods of sitting and driving; frequent entering and exiting of vehicles; sufficient visual, auditory, and physical ability to safely operate the vehicle and maintain awareness of passengers and surroundings; completion of required vehicle inspections; and the ability to assist with emergency procedures and evacuation when necessary.The employee must maintain a valid driver's license and all required qualifications, training, certifications, and driving standards applicable to the position and vehicle operated.The YMCA of South Hampton Roads provides reasonable accommodations to qualified individuals with disabilities to enable them to perform the essential functions of the position, consistent with applicable law.Employment is contingent upon satisfactory performance and successful completion and maintenance of applicable position requirements, which may include background screening, driver's license review, CPS screening, drug and/or alcohol testing, or other screenings as required by the position or applicable law.Compensation:Wage Range: $18.00- $20.00 hourlyThe wage range provided reflects the YMCA of South Hampton Roads' good-faith determination of the minimum and maximum starting salary for this position.
