Role Overview

AVD Workforce Connect LLC is recruiting on behalf of a client seeking a Senior Histology Technician for a full-time, direct-hire position in South Burlington, Vermont.

This senior, hands-on role requires two to three years of grossing experience, along with previous hands-on professional histology experience. The Senior Histology Technician will primarily perform grossing responsibilities while also performing histology procedures, including tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, staining, slide preparation, and technical quality review.

The position offers technical autonomy and an opportunity to help establish reliable workflows within a newly launched laboratory. There are no immediate people-management responsibilities. Role-specific training will be provided as needed.

The client is a medical and diagnostic laboratory organization specializing in digital pathology and subspecialty diagnostic services. The organization partners with physician practices, physician-owned laboratories, hospitals, and healthcare systems nationwide.

The client's mission is to improve patient care and outcomes by delivering advanced subspecialty diagnostics and modern pathology technology. Its services include digital pathology diagnostics, hospital pathology support, and digital pathology software solutions designed to support efficient laboratory workflows.

As part of its continued expansion, the client is launching a new laboratory location in Vermont and is seeking a qualified Senior Histology Technician to perform both grossing and histology work as the laboratory ramps up operations.

Key Responsibilities
Grossing Responsibilities

• Receive, verify, and prepare assigned tissue specimens for histologic processing.
• Perform gross examinations of assigned specimen types according to laboratory procedures and within the scope authorized by the laboratory.
• Examine, measure, describe, orient, ink, dissect, and prepare assigned specimens.
• Select and submit representative tissue sections for histologic processing.
• Prepare and label tissue cassettes while maintaining specimen identification and traceability.
• Document gross descriptions, specimen measurements, and submitted sections accurately.
• Identify and report specimen discrepancies, unusual findings, or circumstances requiring additional review.

Histology Responsibilities

• Perform tissue processing, paraffin embedding, microtomy, slide mounting, routine and special staining, slide preparation, and technical quality review.
• Maintain proper tissue orientation during embedding.
• Cut tissue sections using a microtome and mount them on glass slides.
• Prepare completed slides for microscopic examination by a pathologist.
• Operate and maintain assigned equipment, including microtomes, tissue processors, embedding centers, and automated stainers.
• Identify and help troubleshoot technical issues affecting specimen quality, workflow, or turnaround time.
• Complete role-specific training in histology procedures as needed.

Quality, Safety, and Collaboration

• Document specimen handling, grossing, processing, and testing information accurately in laboratory systems and logs.
• Follow laboratory policies, standard operating procedures, quality-control requirements, and safety protocols.
• Handle biological specimens, sharps, and laboratory chemicals safely.
• Participate in required training, competency assessments, quality-control activities, and process-improvement initiatives.
• Report specimen discrepancies, quality concerns, equipment issues, and processing errors promptly.
• Communicate clearly with laboratory leadership, pathologists, and other laboratory personnel.
• Maintain a clean, organized, safe, and collaborative laboratory environment.

Required Education

• Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, biomedical science, clinical laboratory science, medical laboratory science, histotechnology, or another qualifying related science.
• Degree and coursework that satisfy the laboratory's applicable personnel-qualification requirements for the assigned responsibilities.

Required Experience

• 2 to 3 years of hands-on grossing experience in a clinical, diagnostic, surgical pathology, anatomic pathology, or comparable laboratory setting.
• Previous hands-on professional histology experience involving tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, slide preparation, or staining.
• Experience examining, measuring, describing, orienting, inking, dissecting, and submitting tissue specimens.
• Experience preparing and labeling cassettes, maintaining specimen traceability, and producing accurate gross descriptions and documentation.
• Ability to recognize specimen discrepancies or circumstances requiring additional review.
• Ability to perform assigned grossing responsibilities independently after completing required training and competency assessments.
• Willingness and ability to perform both grossing and histology responsibilities in an onsite laboratory environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• HT(ASCP) or HTL(ASCP) certification

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand for extended periods while performing laboratory work.
• Frequent use of the hands and fingers for fine-motor tasks such as grossing, microtomy, and embedding.
• Ability to lift, move, and position materials and supplies weighing up to 25 pounds.
• Ability to visually inspect specimens and slides, including color differentiation and fine-detail recognition.
• Ability to work safely around laboratory chemicals and biological specimens.
