Registered Nurse

The Registered Nurse ensures the overall safety of patient care and incorporates the patient’s cultural background and values into methods of communication and service provision. The Registered Nurse performs both clinical and administrative functions, by providing high quality patient care and direction for optimal unit operations. He/she observes, reports and documents physical, psychological, or safety status changes in the patient’s condition to appropriate members of the clinical team including the Charge Nurse. The Registered Nurse documents all care in the electronic medical record. He/she assists the Charge Nurse with the smooth flow of patients by periodically reviewing the volume and types of patients in the waiting area and reporting delays. The Registered Nurse promotes and supports the concept of teamwork by acting as a role model on the clinical unit. The registered nurse maintains knowledge of new and current skills and trends in nursing through professional development activities. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Prepare unit for patient flow by organizing daily huddle. Maintain hand hygiene and all infection control practices. Obtain vital signs and specimens (urine, throat swabs, etc.). Document care rendered in the EMR including phone notes. Administer immunizations and other medications. Provide health teaching and re-enforce instructions to patient from provider. Obtain prior approval for medical insurance and prescription re-fills. Perform diagnostic testing including blood sugar measurement. Administers treatment and assists provider with procedures. Translate patient information and communication to the patient. Participate in all fire drills, codes of all types. Maintain current basic life support (BCLS) status. Obtain HIV and Bronx RHIO consents. Maintain all patient care equipment in operational order. Attend unit, department and special meetings as scheduled. Provide great customer service as evident by professional dress and respectful communication with patients and coworkers. JOB SPECIFICATIONS Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Baccalaureate in nursing or health administration preferred. Experience: Two (2) years clinical nursing experience, preferably in ambulatory care setting. Interpersonal Skills: Maintain professional communication and presence. Able to remain calm in difficult situation. Reasoning Ability: Possess time management and organizational skills. Able to define problems, collect and analyze data, and draw conclusions. Able to interpret technical instructions in mathematical and diagram formats. Language Skills: Able to speak, read, write and communicate effectively in English. Able to prepare and deliver concise written and oral reports. Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, using whole numbers, fractions, decimals and percentages. Ability to compute and interpret numerical and graphic data. Physical Demands: Has physical dexterity to effectively perform both fine and gross motor skills. Able to stand for extended periods. Able to ambulate without difficulty. Able to sit and use a computer. Able to lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Vision requirements include ability to discern colors accurately, and to see accurately at both near and far distances. Certifications/Licenses/Registrations: NYS Registered Professional Nurse. Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
