Project Coordinator, Chargeway

The Project Coordinator is a dynamic, hybrid role responsible for driving community engagement, facilitating park development, and supporting day-to-day operations for the Southwest Detroit Environmental Vision (SDEV) Chargeway program. This position bridges the gap between community-driven visioning and structural execution. The ideal candidate is an organized, self-driven individual—ideally a local resident—who is passionate about environmental justice, landscape design, and community empowerment. This role offers a distinct professional growth pathway , featuring direct mentorship and training in core Project Management methodologies to prepare the candidate for future leadership within the organization. Status: Full-Time Pay range: $20-26/hr Location: In-person, on-site availability required 1. Community Outreach & Volunteer Coordination Engagement: Act as the primary, visible liaison between SDEV/Chargeway and neighborhood residents, block clubs, and local stakeholders. Committees: Organize, schedule, and facilitate advisory committee meetings and community design sessions for the scattered-site network. Volunteer Coordination: Recruit, coordinate, and lead volunteers for park development, maintenance projects, and community activation events. 2. Site Facilitation & Park Maintenance Operations: Oversee on-site, day-to-day park development and maintenance activities across active community garden/park sites. Vendor Relations: Schedule recurring contract work (landscaping, repairs) and ensure contractors have site access and clear instructions. Resource In-take: Actively solicit material donations (e.g., soil, plants, lumber, tools) to support park upkeep and volunteer days. 3. Communications & Marketing (in partnership with the North Toledo Block Club VP) Digital Presence: Coordinate with social media team channels and website updates to highlight park progress, upcoming events, and community stories. Public Relations: Draft and distribute a monthly newsletter to the general public and neighborhood networks. Reporting Support: Assist in gathering data and stories for the monthly Chargeway Impact Report sent to funders and partners. 4. Project Sustainability & Fund Development Meets with government agencies to understand goals and opportunities, seek alignment, and attend meetings Identifies potential partnerships and outside opportunities to support program goals, including developing relationships with funders and foundations 5. Youth Programming Integration Supports recruitment for youth participation Supports summer youth employment program Develops curriculum in coalition with youth participants & other SDEV youth departments Works alongside contracted guest professionals Project Facilitation, Training & Functions To support the program during this transitional funding phase, the Coordinator will receive dedicated training from the Director to take on the following critical Project facilitation tasks: Task & Timeline Tracking: Learn to utilize project management software (Monday.com) to track project milestones, ensure team accountability, and monitor progress toward the 10-site goal. Meeting Architecture: Own the scheduling, agenda creation, and action-item tracking for interdepartmental meetings (aligning with the Community Education Manager and Fund Development). Budget & Invoice Facilitation: Assist the Director by tracking project receipts, monitoring expenses against site budgets, and routing contractor invoices for approval. Risk Escalation: Serve as the "eyes and ears" on the ground, learning to proactively identify project delays, permitting bottlenecks, or community friction points, and escalate them to the Director with proposed solutions. Desired Qualifications & Skill Sets Community Grounding: Strong preference for a resident of the target community with a deep understanding of local dynamics. Core Traits: Highly ambitious, self-driven, with exceptional follow-through and attention to detail. Communication: Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Interests/Background: A background or strong interest in fields such as Urban Planning, Landscape Design, Construction/Skilled Trades, Environmental Justice, or Community Education. Technical Savvy: Comfort with social media management, basic website editing, and a willingness to learn digital project management tools.
