Transit Maintenance Constructor I
King County Metro Transit's Facilities Division has an exciting opportunity for a Transit Maintenance Constructor I. Transit Maintenance Constructors perform maintenance plumbing, mechanical repairs, various types of welding repairs, and repair of transit buildings, facilities, structures, and equipment.
King County Metro Transit's Facilities Division maintains all Metro Transit properties, such as bus bases, park & rides, bus shelters, and offices and maintenance shops. Services include bus shelter repairs and replacements, bus shelter cleaning, trolley wire repairs, radio maintenance for buses, environmental spill clean-up, bus sign replacement, graffiti removal, and other facilities maintenance duties. Internally, team provides division-wide support functions for finance, budget, environmental compliance, safety, training, administrative services and new employee orientation. Planning, inventory/materials management, work center, workforce management, functional asset management, general/maintenance agreements, systems support, capital infrastructure, sustainable resources/energy.
This recruitment will immediately fill one (1) Career Service position and may also be used to create an eligibility pool for future Career Service, Term-Limited Temporary (TLT) and/or Special Duty Assignment (SDA) vacancies valid up to twelve (12) months or until exhausted and at the discretion of the hiring authority. Note on starting wage: Depending on qualifications, we may offer the candidate a different starting step at the discretion of the hiring authority. Job Duties

All employees are expected to model and apply our equity and social justice shared values, behaviors, and practices. As the Transit Maintenance Constructor, you will also:
- Install, modify, maintain, repair, test, and certify components of plumbing and piping systems, backflow prevention assemblies, water and industrial wastewater and related systems.
- Repair, maintain, test, and electronically record the certification of fire prevention/suppression systems, sprinklers and associated fire, life safety and mechanical devices.
- Install and anchor equipment, assemblies, and auxiliary devices to structures in compliance with building and seismic codes and regulations.
- Maintain and service equipment including pumps, pressure washers, gates, shop machinery, grounds-keeping, heavy-duty and related equipment.
- Fabricate and weld ferrous and non-ferrous metals required for the repair, maintenance and construction of facilities, passenger shelters, equipment, and structures.
- Operate and haul heavy-duty equipment including cranes, backhoes, loaders, dump trucks, forklifts, snowplows, road sanding and similar equipment.
- Maintain varied records including work performed, time spent, materials used, operating logs and related information; enter and extract data using automated systems; maintain manual records as required.
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
To be considered eligible for this role, applicants must possess these MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Three (3) or more years of journey-level work experience in the plumbing, welding, or mechanical trades; or, completion of a recognized apprenticeship, training, or vocational school program in the plumbing, welding, or mechanical fields; or, some combination thereof totaling three (3) or more years.
- Journey-level knowledge of and skill in the principles, practices, techniques, tools and equipment of the plumbing and pipefitting trades.
- Knowledge of oxyacetylene and various types of electric arc welding.
- Knowledge of the repair and installation of industrial water and wastewater systems.
- Knowledge of the installation and repair of hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
- Knowledge of the installation and repair of fire suppression and sprinkler systems.
- Knowledge of and skill in the operation and repair of heavy-duty and related equipment.
- Knowledge of the repair and maintenance of varied auxiliary equipment including pumps, pressure-washers, and similar equipment.
- Knowledge of standard construction practices, principles, and building systems.
- Knowledge of related building and health codes and regulations.
- Knowledge of safe moving and lifting practices, occupational hazards, and safety requirements.
- Basic computer skills required to enter and extract information from automated systems and related software applications.
- Skill in the interpretation and application of building blueprints and related design schematics.
- Skill in the use of the tools and equipment used in plumbing and mechanical repairs.
- Ability to provide customer service with excellent interpersonal skills.
- Skill in working with a variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as working as part of team.

Work Schedule: This position is typically scheduled full time (40 hours per week), with a typical schedule of Monday-Friday day shift. However, because schedules are selected by a seniority-based twice-annual'shift pick', employees must be available and willing to work any shift (day, swing, or overnight), weekends, nights, holidays, and callouts. This position is not exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is therefore overtime eligible, with prior supervisory approval. This position is not eligible for telework/remote work.
Work Location: The work location will be at South Maintenance Facility (11911 E Marginal Way S; Seattle, WA 98134). The work location for this position is subject to change and may also be assigned to other locations within the King County Metro Transit service area, including Seattle, Tukwila, Bellevue, and North Seattle.
Work Environment: Work may be performed indoors or outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather. Work may need to be performed in confined spaces and at heights, such as on roofs. Must be able and willing to wear safety equipment and protective clothing as required.
Physical Environment: This position is required to frequently lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds and may involve lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 100 pounds with assistance. Frequent walking, reaching, climbing, kneeling, stooping, and safe operation of power tools are also required. Work is often performed in cramped and awkward positions.
