Position Summary: The Finance Director supports the CEO in the financial implementation of the vision, mission, programmatic and business objectives of the organization as set forth by the Board of Directors. With general guidance from the CEO, the Finance Director is responsible for ensuring that financial policies, systems and procedures are developed and put in practice to assure correct and responsible accounting and compliance with funder requirements. The Finance Director oversees the staff and activities of the Finance Department and provides tools and guidance to management and staff for the financial planning and analysis of projects and programs, and in the utilization of accepted financial practice in furtherance of Strategic and Operational Plan objectives. The Finance Director is a member of the Executive Management Team and staffs the Board of Directors’ Audit and Finance Committee. As such the Finance Director provides reports, analysis, and strategic recommendations. Duties & Responsibilities: Establish/update fiscal policies and procedures which provide appropriate internal controls, meet requirements of funding agreements, and ensure maintenance of a clear audit trail. Develop and implement a cost allocation plan that meets federal OMB requirements. Design/update/improve and maintain a centralized accounting records and reporting system, which complies with generally accepted accounting standards for nonprofits, provides accurate and timely information to the lines of business, management and the Board of Directors, and provides policies, structures and standards to which the organization must adhere. Oversee processing of all receipts, disbursements, journal entries and other fiscal records, and supervise all payroll functions and administration of benefits to assure compliance with regulatory and deposit requirements, accuracy, timelines and confidentiality. Oversee and prepare and ultimately present internal financial reports which meet the needs of management, the Board of Directors and funders. Oversee and manage the annual audit process. Lead, manage, and continuously improve the organization’s annual budget, forecasting, and monthly financial review processes, partnering with the Executive Management Team and department leaders to establish financial targets, monitor performance, and proactively address variances. Help Program/Project Managers develop and thoroughly understand: their own program budgets, how program and administrative budgets combine to make the organizational budget, and how to use financial reports from the finance department as a tool to plan and manage activities. Review all project and program proposals for financial impact on the organization and make recommendations to the CEO. Assist Program/Project Managers to properly manage and monitor grants and contracts for fiscal compliance. Manage a system to assure proper handling of finances for those projects for which the organization is the Fiscal Agent. Serve on the Executive Management Team, participate in the Development Services Committee’s loan approval process, and staff the Board of Directors' Audit and Finance Committee. Modernize the finance function by improving financial systems, streamlining processes, automating reporting, and leveraging technology to increase efficiency, accuracy, and scalability. Perform other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, & Experience: This position requires well-developed management and communication skills practiced in organizations with a variety of different types of activities. The Finance Director must have the ability to work in the complex and rapidly changing environment of public and private funding, managing multiple cost centers effectively. The ability to model professional behavior and a strong work ethic and to invite trust, open communication and mutual accountability is critical in this position. Credentials include: Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or related field; active CPA status is highly desired, and an advanced degree or additional education in a related field is a plus. Minimum of five to ten years of finance experience and management responsibilities, supervisory experience preferred. Experience in strategic thinking, financial planning, budgeting, interpretation of financial data, oversight of accounting procedures, and helping staff and the Board use and understand financial information. A full understanding of nonprofit organization financial planning and management, including IRS and OMB regulations is desired. Advanced computer skills, including full competency in use and development of spreadsheets, knowledge of database programs, experience in design and set-up of project and organizational accounting systems, and an ability to quickly learn and use financial software. Proficiency with Accufund is desired. Good organizational skills and the ability to balance multiple tasks at one time, completing projects efficiently and with quality, while working through the pressure of deadlines. Self-directed and able to adapt to peaks and lulls in work levels. Able and willing to initiate special projects as work level permits. Strong interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills, capacity to work collaboratively with team members, as well as the capacity to be a thought partner with organization leadership; ability to learn quickly, retain knowledge and adapt to ever changing program needs. Physical Demands: Ability to lift up to 20 pounds as needed; ability to sit for extended periods of time; ability to sit, stoop, kneel, bend and lift as needed for routine office work; extensive wrist and hand movements required as related to keyboarding; and ability to be mobile as related to business needs.
