This is an advanced specialized professional nursing position that coordinates the school health program in a large region of the county. It involves providing oversight of several school nurses (up to eleven) and the outcomes for a geographical section of the county that encompasses up to 30 schools. The Team Lead provides primary, secondary and rehabilitative care to students in public schools, homes and communities. This nurse practices independently and demonstrates autonomous decision-making skills. The primary purpose is to promote health and prevent disease in the school, home and community. Examples of Duties
The duties for this position include, but are not limited to:
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a B.S. in Nursing which includes a Public Health Nursing rotation and two years of Public Health nursing experience; or a Master's in Public Health and graduation from a school of professional nursing and two years of professional nursing experience; or graduation from a school of professional nursing and three years of professional nursing experience including two years of Public Health nursing experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Individuals employed in a local Health Department without a B.S. Degree which includes a Public Health Nursing rotation or a Master's in Public Health, will be required to complete an introductory course in principles and practices of public health nursing sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services- Division of Public Health within one year of employment as a condition of continued employment in accordance with Health Services Commission Rule, 10 NCAC 46.0301.
Necessary Special Qualifications - A current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
Degrees must be received from appropriately accredited universities.
Applicants who have obtained their education outside of the U.S. and its territories must have their academic degrees validated as equivalent to the degree conferred by a regionally accredited college or university in the U.S. The National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) is a referral resource for applicants who need to have their credentials certified as equivalent. The duties for this position include, but are not limited to:
- Serve to manage, consult, develop, execute and evaluate plans that impact student health programmatically.
- Actively involved in policy development and oversees its application in a significant portion of the county.
- Counsel, evaluate and manage a team of nurses.
- Develop and coordinate quality improvement activities for the School Health Services component of the School Health program.
- Monitor and participate in the investigation of disease outbreaks within each school.
- Serve as health care consultant for school personnel, school nurses, students and parents.
- Orient new public health school nurses and monitors progress during their professional development.
- Serve as a liaison between the Health Department and school system.
- Provide case management for students with complex health issues.
- Implement policies that govern the health care of children with special needs.
- Teach, monitor and oversee unlicensed school personnel that provide health care procedures at school.
- Provide or coordinate health education services for students.
- Make home visits as needed.
- Collaborate with community agencies to provide resources for students and their families through serving on committees, task forces, etc.

- Considerable knowledge of and skill in the application of nursing theory, practices, principles, and techniques employed in the field of public health and related programs.
