Learn To Swim Instructor

Under the supervision of the Aquatics Director, Assistant Manager, and Shift Supervisors, a Learn to Swim Instructor is a non-exempt position responsible for the safety and well-being of Learn to Swim participants at the Turner Aquatic Center. Performs swimming lesson instructor duties as assigned by the Aquatics Director, Assistant Manager or Shift Supervisor. This employee's work schedule occurs during Turner Aquatic Center learn to swim classes.

Essential duties and responsibilities include monitoring swimmers for safety, completing swim lesson reports and records, assisting with preparation and clean up for LTS classes, following safety directives established by the City, County, State, Federal, Turner Recreation Commission and Turner USD #202, skilled in verbal communication with both children and adults, developing and implementing swimming lesson plans effectively, maintaining positive relationships with students, parents and community patrons, modeling major strokes and other swimming techniques in and out of the water as established by the American Red Cross, and maintaining reliable transportation.

Marginal functions include obeying and complying with all Turner Recreation and Turner Aquatic Center policies, providing first aid or emergency CPR if necessary, working collaboratively with other staff members and management, maintaining swim lesson equipment and supplies in proper working order, reporting to swim lessons appropriately dressed and ready to begin class promptly, maintaining progress reports, mobility to handle up to 8 children in the water at one time, and performing other duties necessary or assigned.

Position requirements include no experience required but preferred, must be at least 15 years of age, must be able to read, write, and count, current CPR and First Aid certification is required, must possess current Water Safety Instructor certification from the American Red Cross, ability to establish successful working relationships with co-workers, volunteers, and the public, use good professional judgment, honesty, and integrity in decision making, enforce department policies and procedures, interpret written instructions and manuals, interact with the public in a professional manner, have verbal and written communication skills, independent problem solving, independent decision making, supervision from the Aquatics Director, Assistant Manager, and Shift Supervisors, responsibility for aquatic facility equipment, daily contact with the general public, co-workers, and supervisory personnel, honesty, fairness, strong customer service skills, work environment characteristics include wet and/or hot and humid conditions, outside conditions, noise level usually moderate, physical demands include swimming, using hands and fingers to handle or feel, sitting, standing, walking, reaching with hands and arms, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, lifting and/or moving up to 50 lbs, specific vision abilities required, 500 yard minimum swim every other week, ability to perform first aid and CPR to staff and patrons, subject to pre-employment physical examination, drug and alcohol testing.
