Travel RN Med Surg (IU 3rd Floor)

Location: Cudahy, Wisconsin (20 minutes from Milwaukee) Facility Type: Level IV Trauma Center Hospital Beds: 100 Unit: Med Surg IU 3rd Floor (33 Beds) Average Census: 2426 Patients

Position Requirements

• Minimum 1 year of Med Surg/Telemetry experience
• First-time travelers accepted
• Active RN license required
• BLS required
• ACLS preferred
• EPIC experience preferred

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

The unit primarily cares for geriatric patients with a variety of medical and post-surgical conditions, including:

Orthopedic Cases

• Total hip replacements
• Total knee replacements

Urology Cases

• TURPs
• Cystoscopies

General Surgery Cases

• Ostomies (new and established)
• Gallbladder surgeries
• Appendectomies
• Colectomies

Medical Diagnoses

• CHF
• COPD
• Respiratory conditions
• Kidney, liver, and GI disorders
• CIWA patients
• IV drug abuse patients (IVDA)
• Diabetes management
• Telemetry patients
• Cardiac overflow patients (no cath lab on-site)

Patient Ratios

RN Ratios

• Days: 1:45
• Nights: 1:67 (occasionally up to 1:8)

CNA Ratios

• Days: 1:56
• Nights: 1:78

Required Skills

Candidates should have experience with:

• Orthopedic patient care
• Continuous Bladder Irrigation (CBI)
• NG tube placement and management
• Foley catheter placement and management
• Chest tube management
• Pleurex and other drain management
• Wound care
• Central line, port, and midline blood draws
• Cardiac rhythm interpretation

Common Drips

• Cardizem
• Amiodarone
• Heparin
• Lasix
• Insulin (Titration within established parameters)

Department Support

The unit offers strong interdisciplinary support, including:

• Charge RN with reduced patient assignment
• HUC coverage until 7:00 PM
• Phlebotomy services for peripheral lab draws
• Respiratory Therapy available 24/7
• Hospitalist coverage 24/7
• OT/PT/ST during daytime hours
• Centralized telemetry monitoring with tele techs

• Medication Dispensing: Pyxis

  • Virtual monitoring systems
  • Ceiling lifts

Floating Requirements

Travelers may float to:

• Other Med Surg units
• ER hold areas
• ICU overflow assignments

Note: Travelers will only receive Med Surg patient assignments.

Orientation

• New Employee Orientation (NEO)
• One 12-hour unit orientation shift to learn workflow and processes

Scheduling Information

Shift Options:

• Days: 7:00 AM 7:30 PM
• Nights: 7:00 PM 7:30 AM

Weekend Requirement:

• Every other weekend

On-Call Requirement:

• Low census call only (up to 36 hours per contract)

Holiday Requirement:

• 50% of holidays during the contract

Schedule Release:

• Created in 6-week blocks
• Posted approximately 3 weeks before start
