Position Description SUMMARY As a Construction Manager, this position is responsible for providing senior-level leadership and overseeing the on-site execution of marine, heavy civil, and/or railroad construction projects. This role ensures daily field activities are performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with project specifications. The Construction Manager drives field performance by coordinating labor, subcontractors, and equipment; maintaining schedule and cost targets; and ensuring exceptional workmanship and operational discipline. This position serves as the primary authority in the field and plays a key role in supporting overall project strategy and successful project delivery. JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide comprehensive leadership and direction for all on-site construction activities from mobilization to completion for marine, heavy civil, and railroad construction projects.
- Oversee all aspects of field operations, including safety performance, environmental compliance, scheduling, quality control, productivity, and resource allocation across multiple work areas or projects.
- Develop, implement and maintain detailed construction schedules and coordinate daily and weekly work plans to ensure alignment with critical path milestones and contractual requirements.
- Ensure field operations are executed in full compliance with contractual obligations, including timely submission of all required notifications and documentation.
- Supervise, guide, and hold accountable superintendents, foreman, field crews and subcontractors, ensuring full adherence to project plans, specifications, and company safety standards.
- Monitor and communicate project progress to internal and external stakeholders, proactively identifying issues and taking corrective action to maintain productivity and minimize delays.
- Coordinate delivery and use of labor, materials, company-owned and rental equipment, and heavy machinery to prevent downtime.
- Conduct regular site inspections with Superintendents and Project Engineers to verify quality, compliance, and readiness for upcoming phases.
- Collaborate closely with Project Managers and Engineers to align field execution with overall project objectives, resolve technical challenges, support constructability decisions, and maintain project continuity.
- Lead the tracking, documentation, and reporting of field progress, including cost impacts, manpower and equipment utilization, and productivity to support accurate forecasting, cost control, and schedule management.
- Perform other related duties as assigned, including assuming Superintendent or Project Manager responsibilities, as required per project scope, staffing needs, or company directives.
- Education: Bachelor's in Construction Management or Civil Engineering from an accredited college or university, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) or be willing/eligible to obtain one upon hire. Valid Driver's License.
- Experience: Five (5) years of experience with on-site construction management in marine, heavy civil, and/or railroad construction operations, supervising multiple crews on large-scale projects from start to finish.
- Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (KSA): Must possess strong written and verbal communication skills in English to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, subcontractors, and clients. Able to problem-solve and interpret a variety of instructions given in written, oral, diagram, or schedule forms. Working knowledge of standard construction practices and law. Advanced knowledge of marine operations such as crane operations, rigging, welding, and dredging, as well as construction scheduling and cost control methods. Ability to lead and motivate field teams, subcontractors, and superintendents. Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills under challenging site conditions.
- Certification(s): Adult First Aid w/ CPR and AED. OSHA-30. Project Management Professional (PMP).
- Experience: Seven (7) years of on-site construction management experience in marine, heavy civil, and/or railroad construction operations.
- Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (KSA): Proficient in Vista Viewpoint, HCSS Heavy Bid, and scheduling software such as Primavera P6. Thorough knowledge and skills in marine construction operations, such as welding, pile driving, crane operations, barge operations, etc.
- The individual must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.
- The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required. This includes a hard hat, safety glasses, life vest, respirators, earplugs, steel-toed shoes, personal flotation devices (PFD), and/or other protective equipment.
- The individual frequently works near moving mechanical parts and must be able to adapt to temperature changes, outdoor conditions, and prolonged exposure to dusty, wet, or humid conditions, loud noises, and vibration.
- The individual may be required to work long hours and/or weekends. Additionally, some out-of-town or overnight travel may be required.
- The individual may occasionally be required to sit in a vehicle for up to 8 hours.
- The individual may be required to walk, step, climb, or otherwise move from one location on the job site to another, which may be of varying heights and access parameters.
- The individual may occasionally be required to stand, stoop, bend, crouch, kneel, climb, or sit for long periods.
- The individual may be required to lift objects with a minimum of 10 lbs. and a maximum single-person lift of 50 lbs. This could result in frequent lifting or carrying, depending on project needs.
